Honeywell VR8205 Gas Valve conversion

A while ago I picked up a Hot Dawg 60 unit heater for the garage.

I am finally getting around to getting this thing fired up. Part of the reason I got such good deal on the unit was that it was set up for LP.

I purchased the LP to NG conversion kit. I have switched out the orifices on the burner. I now need to chagne the spring inside the valve per the instructions.

My trouble is that the screws holding the valve together look like tamperproof torx, but none of my tamperproof torx bits fit. A closer look and the heads appear to be a 5 point tamperproof screw.

Can somone point me in the right direction to get the appropriate tool to finish up this job? It is getting cold here and I am really looking forward to having some heat in my garage!

Kinger you should not have to dismantle the valve . There should be a large flat flathead screw on the top of the valve . Below this screw will be a nylon flathead screw that holds the spring in . This is what you remove to put the new spring in on most gas valves . You will also have to have the gas valve adjusted for NG when it is converted so that it is flowing at the right pressure . Simply changing the spring isnt all that is needed . The valve must be adjusted with a manometer after the spring is replaced ( once it is hooked up to the gas line ) .

Thanks. I will take another look when I get home tonight. I was under the impression that I had to remove the plastic cover on the valve to do this, and it has the same screws.

Thanks for the help Rick. I got the spring switched out last night. Now to complete the gas line routing and fire this thing up!

Thanks again for the help Rick. I have had the unit operable for a couple of weeks now. A quick borrow of manometer from a coworker and all is good in the heater garage world!

Hey Kinger good to hear its working well but I gotta ask did you change the orfices in the burners as well . They are differant for NG and propane as well.

Yes I did. I bought the LP to NG conversion kit to make sure I had all the correct pieces!

I am Project Manager/Enginer for a Mechanical Contractor. It helps when it comes to some of these things. I just wish I had more hands on equipment experience.
