Hood strut fix

Quite some time ago, one of the hood struts on my Intrepid broke. It popped off the lower ball, and was crunched by the hood when it closed.

I've lived with having to prop up the hood since then, but no more!

A couple days ago I decided to fix it.

I made this out of 6061 aluminum. Two threaded holes for the strut and a (too long, but doesn't interfere with anything) set screw. The hole for the ball end isn't spherical like the ball, just a straight drilled hole. The set screw comes in under the ball to keep it from coming out.

$20+ saved.

All of mine lose their gas before anything breaks physically.
I have to prop my truck hood even though it still has both struts in place.

pair of vise grips on the strut keeps the hood up. Next time you go to the junk yard look around and see how many people forgot their vise grips on the hood strut. I have gotten a couple pairs that way!

I just buy new ones. For $10, I'm not gonna waste my time.

On customer cars, I use the old vice grip method. I am done with hoods suddenly falling onto my head.

did you mean good duramax? I havent seen many in the hood with the fab skills or initiative to make a quality replacement piece like that. lol!
