Hook and pick set recommendations?

My el cheapo (I think they were free) Pittsburgh hook and pick set failed miserably on their first real use.

What's a good set that's not made out of monkey metal?

I don't mind paying more if they will actually work.

I have had a snap on set for 20 years. $45 and worth the money. Plus I still have a good resell value

Honestly, you can't beat the Snap On comfort grip set. Worth every penny, and haven't been able to dull any of them, still insanely sharp.

The Craftsman/Ullman/Matco picks will do you alright, but the handles are well known for falling off.

My vote is for snap on.
But at times dental style picks are the way to go.

This is one of those times where it pays to get the snap on ones

I really like my Macs...though I can't say I recommend them if you're looking for something really nice. The handles are the same design as their hard handle screw drivers, but they're not USA made. The business end is definitely of better quality than HF, but that isn't saying much. My driver gives me a free set once every year or two. Only ever lost them -- never actually broken mine. But I usually only use them to pick out o-rings or clean threads or pull trash out of banjo fittings. I've got a beefy Mac set I use for tugging and prying -- normal sized screwdriver handles.

The ullman (craftsman) picks are pretty good but unfancy handles. Around 8 bucks.

Otherwise a pro set might be worth it but not if you abuse them (cough snap rings); you'll bend any set.

Whelp... I guess it's time to buy my first snap on tools.
There are some things "Snappy" that have no equal replacements.
I ***** about the company constantly but it is, without any shadow of doubt, the most innovative and best run tool company that ever existed.
That said. I only have a little bit of their stuff.I'm not an auto mechanic. If I was I'd surely have quite a bit more.Us industrial types fanboy around Proto quite a lot.

Yep, Snap On.

But I have a ton of the HF cheapies for doing "bang em up" work, and the dental picks from HF and yard sales. I grab any and all sizes/shapes. I use picks A LOT on old machinery and what not....sometimes I don't necessarily need strength, just a little nudge here or there.

The craftsman professional series are still readily available and usually go on sale once a month for about $30.00

Get the Snap On's, very tough and seem to last forever. I have a set of Matco's in the extra long length that have held up pretty well, although I don't use them nearly as much as the Snap On's. Not sure who the Oem wasn't on the Matco's.

I've got the snappy hard handles and the Menards. Can't find a dimes worth of difference between them. The Menards are only $6. That's the regular everyday price. Keith

Get the mac set. I have 2 big sets. One for at home one for work. Think I payed like 130 bucks for each and it came with a full set of picks and a set of scrapers. Good deal and it's lifetime no hassle warranty.

Here is mine. I lost my straight pick. Somehow I've ended up with two circle picks. I've been watching eBay for a while trying to find the missing one. I bought this set in the early 90s if I remember correctly and use them all the time. One of the cool things about snap on as I mentioned is resale value having good resale value also means that you'll be able to find good used missing tools on eBay for replacement

Check out Ullman Devices, I think they make stuff for craftsman line.
I like my picks to have plain, slim straight handles. Never felt the need to have a screwdriver grip on them, i find myself holding picks similar to holding a pen.
I have the long 8-piece set and regular 4 piece set from Ullman.
Throw in the dental pick set (made in pakistan) from Harborfreight and those should cover the basics.

Chris, nice yellow Snap-on, let's see more!
I have several sets of the Snap-on mini hard handle picks and I love them.

That orange one sticks out like s sore thumb. I need a yellow mini flat tip as well. I will keep searching. I have converted many of my ratchets to yellow handles as well over the years. I have three of the yellow file handles that I rarely use but good to have

Prices have really risen on Snap on. I have two sets I bought in the 1980s when they first came out, and IIRC, they were around $15/set.
