Hook type question

I bought a differential chain hoist a couple months ago and the seller gave me a bucket of other stuff. Among the other stuff was this hook. It's a Crosby but I'm not finding any real info on it. In fact, I've not yet come across other like it on Google images, but I'm not really sure what to look for. Would this have been put on the end of a wire rope?

It is definitely a "swivel" style hook which in most cases used on wire rope. They allow the wire rope to spool onto the drum much smoother without twisting since the hook itself is turning, and not the rope.

Somebody identified it as an I code carbon steel hook after I posted a picture of the other side. I don't know why I didn't take a pic of the important side the first time. But nobody has yet figured out when that system of attachment was used or how.

Agreed....maybe I'm missing what the OP is asking, but it's pretty obvious another piece (the eye or possibly another hook to act as a quick extension etc) fits in the clamp the way the hook does, but points upward.. Is that what we are trying to figure out?

Clearly something was held captive in the other end of the collar but I'm trying to figure out what. Seems like if it was just an eye, it would have a similar shape to the shank of the hook. With the conical shape, it seemed like it might be a swage or something that was held there. Haven't been able to find any info on it anywhere though. Other guys familiar with rigging haven't ever seen anything quite like it either.

Probably clamped on a knob on the top of a come-a-long or chain fall, or something else like that....

Besides being a crane hook, in the tapered section above the shouldered end of the crane hook is where another "knuckle" goes.

Could be setup for a clevis + pin that you wrap a thimble + cable thru.

Or could have another similar split cast pocket to entrap & pin the last link of a roller chain.

Missing the OEM parts its only good for home shop use now. A business would typically not want the OSHA liability of cobbling it together without a P.E. stamped design + proof test which would far exceed the cost of another crane hook with all of that from the OEM.

I don't think it was designed to accept wire rope. Most applications I'm familiar with will utilize an eye. Either by splicing or by pressing a thimble. Clamping wire rope was always a last choice. We only did it in emergencies with mooring lines but never with a rigging line.

We all pooh poohed plasma line when it was introduced to our fleet. Today it's almost all they use for mooring. The ordinaries job got way easier.
