Hey guys, I swear I've done this before but there were only 3 wires and not four...

Red and black can go to either slotted prong but does the bare ground or the white (nuetral(?) Go the the round post?

Thanks in advance

If the outlet your welder Will be plugged into is fed by a main panel the white and the green would normally be connected to the same bus bar, in which case, IMHO, they can both be landed together .

Other people may have different opinions. but my welder came from the factory with a three conductor power cord and a three prong plug.

And the guy that converts that main panel into a sub someday perhaps when he adds a transfer switch and generator would have no idea you tied neutral and ground together at that receptacle.

I still don't know why we went down this rabbit hole, but that appears to be a sub panel. Snap a pic of the meter, I bet you have a disconnect or meter/main.

Also, is that a leg?
A couple posts and not much of a rabbit hole and someone that doesn't know the difference between a main and a sub can very likely miss something worth pointing out

You don't also have a panel leg?

I found this old pic before drywall. The grey wiring to the left is what feeds my house from the meter.

I assume the meter is on the back of that wall?

Grab a pic of that if you can. No need to open anything, just a pic of the meter and general area. You probably have a meter/main with 2 breakers (house and garage)

This is entirely for pcustom's sake... Is there a breaker outside at the meter?

WTF, I'm not the one who started this...

OP needs to just cap the neutral in the receptacle box. The first reply could have closed the thread

:ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO: It could have, except this is the GJ forum. It doesn’t matter how many simple, direct, accurate answers are posted, someone will come along with a response that heads things in an unnecessary direction.

The Generarac switch was installed with the thought I would add a generator. I haven't yet.

Purely for @mike93lx benefit, that box on the left is marked service disconnect. I bet there is at least 1 breaker in there. Not sure about box on right

If we're really going down this rabbit hole we need the last and right covers open

I did see that, assumed it was solely generator-related, but you may be right that it has a breaker.

I'm really thinking about overcurrent protection, not just a disconnect

There's some nuance that I (and at least 1 panel mfg) forgot related to phrasing of disconnect/OCP.

For example, my meter/main is labeled as main disconnect but has a 200A breaker and 8(?) slots. Can't recall how the generac panel is marked at camp, but the breaker in it functions as the main.

Interesting, so no breaker. Feels like a long run to the main panel without any protection

Those generac panels are most likely ATSs and would be the main service panels. the one on the left feeds the panel in the garage. the one on the right has the gray SER coming out of it next to the garage panel and feeds the panel inside the house

so both the garage panel and house panel are subpanels. The dual generac ATSs are the mains... and there is protection at the ATSs
