Horizontal Cap for Garage Heater?

Hey guys,

I’m thinking of installing a heater for my garage but struggling with venting options. Our new house is on the corner and a vent pipe out the side of the garage (where our patio is) or through the roof (angles to the street) is not visually approved by the wife.

I installed the garage heater at our last house with a B vent. Typical horizontal exit, fresh air intake from outside. I noticed this neighborhood has fireplaces with vent caps that protrude less than 1 ft from the wall.

I’m wondering if these are feasible? At the very least, in the patio side, there won’t be an ugly sideways chimney sticking out. Of course, I need to figure out if they are code or not in MN...

Whatever heater you end up buying will come with documentation that outlines the requirements for venting. Typically your vent needs to clear any structure/overhang by at least 12 inches.

Yeah I figured. Has anyone installed with these vents or know of a heater that can use these vents?

Mine is one of those horizontal vent units, protrudes to under the covered deck which creates havoc in winter. I am gonna play with extend the verticals both top and bottom with longer pieces.

You might consider getting an opinion from the heater manufacturer.

That type of cap is designed as part of a direct vent system, the pipe has an inner pipe for exhaust and then the space between the innner and outer is used to bring in combustion air, the fireplaces that use them are designed specifically for that particular type of vent system. You can't just use tge cap with different types of vent pipe.

This is the vent for the Rinnai DV. They disappear on the side of the building, well, mostly anyway. The vent shown has been installed for 9 yrs.
