I just purchased my new (to me) house and that means a new garage. I'm hoping the new owner will want to buy my 33 gal CF air compressor that I have in the attic (it's not too efficient, loud and I don't want to wrestle it down).

Now I'm in need of a new compressor. I have a crawl space that butts up to a garage wall with about 4' vertical clearance and I'd like to put the compressor there route the line and an external switch to the garage. I will specifically need a horizontal compressor to meet the low height requirements. I'd like a 230V, 2 stage compressor, but would settle for a 110V single stage if there aren't many options. I'd prefer to have a domestic or domestically assembled unit.

Is this my only option? http://www.aircompressorsdirect.com/Campbell-Hausfeld-VT6271-Air-Compressor/p87.html

What are the options? Most everything I'm seeing that is horizontal is 110v and small or is 230V/3 phase and 120 gallons. Thanks for the help!

Sears has a horizontal Craftsman Professional and Northern Tool has a Horizontal Puma, both of which can be wired for 220. Both seem like they would meet your requirements.

I thought I remember reading somewhere that some tall vertical air compressors can be laid down horizontally.

I have been considering doing this with my compressor. I would just have to make some kind of mount for the motor and pump.

A horizontal PUMA is by far the better machine. I've sold a TON of these babies and it's Quieter, Better Balanced, Better Designed, Smoother, and Easy to maintain! If you do not grab the PUMA, you need :lol_hitti

Lots of air compressors are available as horizontal.

Napa brand available with 5 HP / 800 rpm / 80 gal / 16 CFM / 175 psi.

See at:

Good call on the Napa units. I'll look into those. To install I'll need to find 10 neighbors :eyecrazy:

I know some compressors can be wired from 110 to 230; does that make them more efficient? Essentially taking them from 5.5 (or so) cfm to 10+?

More efficient? Yes--It will lower the amps. It isn't gonna change cfm.

Yeah, for normal garage use, the NAPA 80 gal horizontal is a beast . . . but hey thought I'd put a nice high-end target for you . . . LOL. Price is likely scary as well in $2K range.

That website didn't list 60 gal horizontal from NAPA but like other posters have said cheaper brands of horizontal are out there.

Good luck on your purchase. Make sure you have process of draining water from the tank. Auto drain would be a good thing.

I personally like have the compressor in the garage where I can keep an eye on the oil level, belt tension... I thought about moving the tank outside and only the motor and pump inside to save room though.
