I have horizontal sliding window in my garage. I would like to put AC in there. I know they make special units for casement windows, but they are $$$. The small unit are $ and only 16 inches wide. The websites say the minimum space is 23 inches side to side but the unit is only 16. Can I strip the unit down to 16 and just fill in above?

I get the feeling that portable units are junk and I already have heat in there so a mini split is not an option.

I am just looking to make the dogs more comfortable (they stay in there). The wall are ceiling are insulated well.

We had a unusual sized window. We ended up with an ' in-room' AC unit. Ours has a 6" vent tube that goes out the window. I thought it was $350 well spent.

As long as you rig up a way to keep it from falling out of the window, I don't see why you can't strip the window kit off a small A/C unit and and add some weatherstripping of your own.

What I might do is make a platform that rests on the interior window sill and has a slot cut out to clear the bottom window track. Screw the platform down to the sill. Then pop the plastic front off the A/C and find a place to sink a few screws through the sheet metal into the platform.

I had the casement style A/C units for a while. They had a big flat plat/bracket that screwed through the bottom of the window frame into the 2x4 with 4" long screws.

On a lot of these window units the case is what directs the airflow in order to cool the compressor. If remove the case you may be causing yourself a big headache.

I found a pdf of the manual and it mentioned IF you are not using the side "curtains" to be sure that the unit is still pitched to the back so it drains. It seems that I can keep the metal frame and not use the side "curtains". Then the unit is only 16 inches wide.

The unit is 5000 BTU. The garage is a tandem (two wide and 2 deep on one of the sides, but only 1 deep on the other). The dogs are on the two deep side (furthest from the garage door). If I put the unit in the window nearest the dogs it should make it "livable" for the dogs.

The wifey is worried about the "poor dogs". I told her that living in an insulated garage is more than many dogs have, but she thinks they need the AC. It looks like they will be getting it and I will be spending $120 for the unit plus the cost of builidng a frame to mount the unit.
