List of hose clamp pliers

Need to buy some hose clamp pliers for automotive use, and searching google found this set:

Berner 30664 Vehicle Hose Clamp Pliers Set 7-piece

The thing is, searching images at google there appear dozens of exactly the same kits, changing the color from blue to red or orange maybe. Berner tools are chinese replicas?

Same looking items:

There's also the "Bergen" brand which is very similar to Berner:

BERGEN Hose Clamp Pliers Set Long Reach Flexi VAG Remote Automotive Pliers Pick

Aliexpress has several similar kits:

Draper also has a kit of 5 pieces:

Knipex 85 51 250 A: pliers without locking mechanism
Knipex 85 51 250 AF: pliers with locking mechanism

BGS also has some pliers:

BGS 504 Hose Clamp Pliers Set in Tool Tray

Facom also has hose clamp pliers but are very expensive. I don't know what to think, which set do you recommend?

Those set are way overkill for a DIY and even most professionals. A good set of cable operated hose clamp pliers is probably all you need.

For small hose clamps (like on lawn mowers) bent needle nose pliers work well.

I use currently standard electrician pliers or cobra-like knipex pliers, the problem is that the jaw doesn't grip properly, tending to slide and damaging the galvanic protection or the paint of the clamp, thus corrosion and oxidation will appear with time. For a proper well done job, the jaw must not erode the clamp, so I'm looking for something better. The basic chinese cable operated costs about $25, and the set of 7 pieces about $50 so I think it pays off. Furthermore with several pliers you can operate on one end while the other is already loose..

The chinese kits some people complains that break easily and are too flimsy, just look at the amazon comments. The Draper 89794 has very good rating and a bit more expensive than the chinese with fewer pieces. The BGS and Facom certainly are very good but much more expensive. The Knipex 85 51 250 AF is top quality too, but lacks the extension bowden cable in case you want to remove clamps that are deep in the engine bay.

I have the Astro kit and I use the one in the lid with the cable a whole heck of a lot. I use none of the other ones in the kit. Other than the hose pipe separator. ( in the center on the bottom )
I also have the Kinipex, I am pleased with them, but have found some shortcoming with some access issues here and there.

I have been pretty pleased with these as well.

Just last week i was also on a quest to find a good set. I was looking at the knipex- too expensive. ASTRO sets/ blue or red box sets- read bad reviews. I saw many people raving for Mayhew's OLD style hose clamp pliers- i was going to pull the trigger but they were out of stock. I ended up with Astro 9409A AND Stanley Proto JFFHC4- i HIGHLY recommend this proto set, MAC rebrand them. I love the vise grip syle hose clamp compressors. They really lock onto the clamps and you can safely move the clamps anywhere without stressing your Palm holding against the spring force. Another plus is that it comes with hose pinch offs which are also locking- i used them on brake lines and fuel hoses, very helpful.

The Astro Pneumatic 9409A looks great and have 2 mm diameter adjustable cable, while chinese ones only have 1.5 mm diameter not adjustable. However, the Astro 9409A is expensive to import here to europe. The cheapest I've seen on eBay is $40 plus $28 shipping plus $13 import taxes. In total $81. I could buy the Knipex for that price. Probably the best bang for the buck is to get the Draper Expert HCP5 89794, it looks very solid too, and I get a whole set of pliers. There's the new model Astro Pneumatic 9409AF.

I see, the teeth on the Blue Point wear out easily because it's mild carbon steel, quite soft and cheap, probably cast steel. That's not adequate for friction mechanisms, which in this case suffer from a lot of torque due to the locking mechanism position. The Craftsman Cable-operated Hose Clamp Pliers, on the other hand, have a latch locking mechanism. If I go with the Astro I may have big trouble getting a warranty replacement here in europe, and also the shipping takes a lot longer and I will have to pay the import duties again. Not the best option.

The Facom Remote Hose Spring Clamp Pliers DM.MUB look badass, but really expensive though!

I also use the astro for my cable operated. I used them for over 4 years with no problem and just last week let a new tech use them once and he broke the cable. Good thing is that they sell replacement parts at a reasonable price.

These! These things are the best, i broke 2-3 sets including a mayhew before I came across these. Have the thicker cable and wider ratcheting teeth/pawl as well as the adjuster at the bottom.

I think mine is Astro, but they are all too fancy unless you use them frequently.
