I own the sears cable pliers and they work great and are a great value. I don't remember for sure but I want to say they are made in France.

Same here. I've had mine for a couple of years. Only used 'em a few times, but no problems.

I bought these, and have hardly used the cable pliers since.

I've had the craftsman for a long time; I have had to warranty them a couple times (cable breaks or bends), they work well... very reasonably prices compared to other brands. The oem is a french company (gillet-group); they are not ratcheting, sometimes I wish they would open up wider and in really tight confines, there maybe some other designed head that would work better. That being said; for the price you cannot find a better cable operated hose plier of this type. There is no one silver bullet for every situation; there are some other styles that can be helpful in tight areas.

I have a set of the snap on ones and had issues with them so a new warrantied pair sits in the package in my tool box. It was like the teeth for the lock wore seemingly quickly if I remember correctly its been a couple years since I have used them. I bought the Matco branded ones and use those. They were originally Mayhew years and years ago but they relabeled someone else's along the way and really these have been ok. They look like the purple astro but in orange http://www.amazon.com/dp/B003D3N7YW/?tag=atomicindus08-20

The descriptions are almost the same as well word for word

I thought I read on my package that the cable wasn't warrantiable. It had a part number for new cable.

I have the Craftsmans and they work pretty good, I really haven't had the opportunity to put the screws to it yet though.

Yeah, the warranty (on the cable replacement issue) is a odd one; I have tried to find the part printed on the package to buy on sears website or the sears parts website. For some reason; they don't sell it or discontinued it, so they just have given me a new one every time. I emailed Mayhew; they do sell a cable replacement/repair kit but from what I can tell, Sears does not. I believe that Mayhew is the oem company that supplies the tool Sears (even though they have another company make it for them to begin with). Here is the email that I got when I contacted Mayhew.

Dear XXXXXXXXX,

You should find out if Sears has a warranty on this item. Most of the Craftsman tools have a lifetime warranty. They may give you a new one.

If they don’t. You can go to one of our other distributors that buy the cable kit for our version of this tool. The cable kit is part number 28651 and we also offer a complete repair kit which is part number 28654. Both these kits will accommodate your Craftsman version. Our distributor that will gladly help you is FIND MRO (Div of Grainger) telephone number 847-647-3422.

I hope this helps.

Sincerely,

XXXXXX

Here are the two kits mentioned; in my case they gave me new pliers each time I returned them.

I have a Craftsman one and the cable kinked the first time I used it. I called Sears to get a replacement cable. I gave them a part number. No such number. I took it back and got a new replacement. It works but it has issues. It could open larger and close smaller. I'll most likely order a Astro in the future.

After seeing them posted on here a while back I picked up the lisle hose clamp vise.

part number LIS44480.

http://www.tooltopia.com/lisle-44480.aspx

For something that is easy to get to its still a job for the cable pliers or 90* long need nose. But the vise is perfect for that hard to get to clamp where you can't seem to find a good angle on.
I haven't used them yet but I'm sure when the need arises it will save the day.
