I've made a few from vise grips and a pair of round stock pins welded to each jaw.

The pins can go perpendicular to the jaws in a "T" shape or inline with the jaws.

Good to grind off the plating on the jaws, for some reason that particular plating is much more aggressive at jumping onto the tig tungsten and creating a rounded tip that lets the arc wander all over.

One just adjusts the amount of compression based on the hose...different needs for radiator hose vs a 4mm air line tube.

I got a set from harbor freight, I usually don't buy **** from them but was there with a buddy and saw these. Used em about 5 times since I got em years ago and they have worked every time, but I would like to upgrade to a metal ratcheting set at some point. If you just need something cheap to get you by they should work.

+1 for the vise-grip design hose clamp pliers from Harbor Freight - this is the perfect tool to buy there, as the force required to seal off a rubber hose is very low so you don't need drop-forged components or precision alignment for it to work well. I have two of the HF tools and they work fine.

Is that a typo? I can’t imagine any pliers pinching off a 5” diameter hose.

Long nose HF locking pliers. Cut and slit some hose for cushions. Tip, run a tap through the thread part of those locking pliers. Amazing difference !

I have a set of Blue Point that I really like. Think there made by Lang

Yeah I got the BP HCP313 from eBay last Nov....$47 for a 3pc set. Still, they're huge but could be useful in open areas.

I think this is one place where it's best to have several different styles from big locking metal ones to the little plastic ones. Every situation is different....

I'm starting to think the same. I never really looked into the plastic one. Which brand do you recommend for those type. I might as well have both

I have an old KD plier that works OK. I find plugging the hose with a bolt and clamp works easier.

You want pliers to pinch off a 5" hose? Maybe you can try and make something with a C-clamp.

Just curious, what are you working on that uses 3-5" hoses that you would want to pinch closed?

So I've got some red plastic Craftsman ones, shortly before Cman entered the race to the bottom....but I swear they were made by someone else.

I found 'em particularly useful on an '04 Forester radiator job....there was some SMALL coolant line that didn't need much clamping force and honestly all the pliers style are damn heavy when they're hanging on something like a 1/4" hose.

That said the plastics can be annoying 'cause you gotta squeeze 'em and then attempt to slide that rectangular locking ring into a detent....but they DO work and DO have their place, it's just not EVERYplace

^^actually I may have been closing off an trans cooling line...but if you think about how hokey or fragile some of those hardlines are you don't always want a big metal "vise grip" hanging off it, plus it winds up wanting to fall in your way.... sometimes a lighter weight plastic one can just be tucked somewhere and it'll just stay, and if it does come down and hit you in the forehead it's much less of an issue.

I prefer the positive locking action of metal for sure, but again nice to have choices

I've got a couple of Gearwrench pinch offs like these. They seem to do the job for the few times I've used them. Brake and fuel lines.

These work well for small hoses like fuel lines on gardening equipment.

Definitely not recommended to be pinching brake lines flat - I made some plugs to seal off the ends of the hoses when needed. Brake hose is a completely different animal than cooling hoses are.

I wouldn't pinch brake lines either. Plus I have steel braided lines on my truck now. But when I worked on cars, when replacing brake lines or calipers, I'd open up a bleeder & use an adjustable hood prop the hold the brake pedal all the way down. That'll keep the brake fluid from constantly dripping out.

i work on everything from small engines to heavy equipment

But have you seen a 4 or 5" hose without a wire in it? I haven't. Just curious where or what runs something that big that can be pinched. The hoses on our test stands can't be pinched.....
