Good Morning, I have purchased one of these units for my garage that is only 20x20. It has a 15' ceiling, so that is why I purchased that size of unit. I am in the process of insulating the garage as well. i live 45 minutes north of Toronto on Lake Simcoe, so we do experience cold temps. and snow. One friend of mine thought this unit is a little big for this garage. Does anyone have any knowledge of these and if they do think it is over sized for this garage?

It is WAY to big and will not run efficient that is why they size they for the room. The sensors, heat exchangers need to get to proper temp to run effcient, it will work just not very good or correct.

It's not an air conditioner.

Thermostat calls for heat, exhaust blower starts, gas valve opens, fire lights, when the heat exchanger heats up the blower will start....and after the heat shuts off, and the exchanger has cooled sufficiently, the blower will shut off. You haven't lost any measurable efficiency.

To OP...mine is oversized too, it's not an issue at all.

If the furnace is oversized the heat exchanger never gets hots enough to run effcient, that is why there is a series of sensors that you left out of your scenario that need to made and monitor the furnaces effciencies. There is a TON of information out there as why to size your furnace correctly written by HVAC professionals here is only one I found. I agree your room will get warm but.....

" How do I determine the correct gas furnace size for my home? Back

One of the most important aspects in your selection of a heating system is proper sizing. A properly sized heating system will provide a high level of comfort, while maintaining maximum efficiency. An oversized system will "short-cycle", meaning that it will cycle on and off more frequently.

Short cycling will limit your comfort due to the frequent on/off cycling and reduce the system operating life. Having said all of this keep in mind that with gas furnaces you don't have to nail your requirement down to the very last BTU. Furnaces are typically sold in 20,000-25,000 Btu increments because the manufacturers know that with heating, you just need to be in ballpark in terms of how many Btu's your home needs.

If you are off by 20-25% there is no real harm. If your heating requirement is about 10% or more above a given furnace's capacity go up to the next size furnace. So how do you select the proper system size for your home?
Here are your options in descending order of most accurate to least accurate.

I have a 75,000 btu in my 24x24 and leave it at 55 degrees. Efficient or not, when its 10 below here in MN and I need to get the snowblower fixed, I want it warm and I want it warm now! I believe I spent 500.00 for the heater about 4 years ago. It deffinately keeps the shop warm. I have a friend that purchased the 45,000 I believe and his garage is 20x24. He doesnt keep his on all the time like me and now says he wishes he would have bought something bigger to get it warmer faster. I suppose a kerosene heater could help with initial heating but its just something extra laying around in the garage. I remember an old saying "Its better to have and not need then to need and not have" You can never have too much heat. G
