Hot Dawg/Open Flame Issues

Are these heaters dangerous if vented? By that I mean, if working with paints or solvents, they have an open flame and vented or not, isn't that a hazard?

Am thinking putting in a h/w unit heater off my house boiler but man is that expensive!

Any input?

Any open flame heater is dangerous with solvent particles. Never spray!!!!

If it has a open flame then it is a hazzard for sure. Venting is for the carbon monoxide issue. If I am using anything flamable I never have a open flame on anywhere. I believe that hot water heaters are suppose to be something like 18" off the floor to help prevent a explosion or fire for that reason.

When the unit calls for heat the burner is a large open flame.

The Rezner UDAS unit heater brings outside air in for combustion in a sealed burner. It uses a concentric vent for improved looks outside. The only other danger at that point is from a spark in the fan motor. I believe you can even order it with a sealed motor.

I ordered my Reznor with electronic ignition specifically so there wouldn't be any open flame when it isn't operating, and have its power wired to a convenient wall switch so I can shut it off easily if I'm working with solvents, etc.

FWIW, Modine now has HDS models which pull in fresh air for combustion. Only reason I know is I had the same concerns with my attached garage. I have low power explosives stored in the garage (in an approved magazine with appropriate permits etc) so am going this route. Only problem is finding an HVAC guy around me that won't rip me off (last quote was for $3k, which had me spitting my drink out my nose when I read it).
