Wow that's awesome! I am definitely going to watch that site. I could use a 75k NG hot dawg for my other garage. I wish I'd of seen that before, I could care less if it is a little banged up, I bought the mr heater 75k ng for my first garage from northerntool a couple motnhs ago.

I was going to go with the 60k for my garage which is 440sq ft but the 75k was the same price, 60k would be more than enough. I think they get even more banged up in shipping as my box was pretty well destroyed when it got here.

NG = natural gas, LPG = liquified petroleum gas. You can get the larger (>20 lb) LP cylinders at Tractor Supply. I tink they have up to 100lb there. The larger non-portable tanks outside homes there are usually dealers that sell and install those; ie.. in my area it is these nice folks: http://www.renaldo.org/norco/start.html

The stationary tanks, a tank truck would come to your house to transfill your tank. The portable ie up to 100lb cylinders you can take to have filled, or the 20lb cylinders are exhangeable a lot of places.

I think in general people use the large stationary LPG tanks if they do not have natural gas service available. With NG you don't have to get anything filled/refilled etc. (though you are at the mercy of the ng supplier if there is a service outage).

A lot of LP appliances will specify if they can run off a portable tank and what the minimum size is. i.e. up to maybe 80k btu input can successfully run off a 20lb cylinder. The lpg needs to be able to vaporize at a rate fast enough to feed the appliance.

Great thanks. Where can such a big tank be acquired? I don't think HD carries these no?

Any savings in buying in larger quantities?

The propane dealer brings it to you. I didn't use enough propane so they made me buy it. Ferrel Gas.

So for those who purchased the scratch and dent units, how banged up were they? I don't mind a dent and scratches, especially at the price they're letting them go for, but I don't want it to look like it got hit by a meteor either.

You should use at least 100lb tanks for these heaters from what i read, something about they need a certain amount of pressure. Mine was dented on pretty much every panel, most of them can be banged out. Some of the dents i think were from fedex. The fan on the back of mine was pushed in so i had to fix that. Haven't had time to hook it up yet to see how it works.

Sounds good...I'm going to keep an eye out for the bang up units!

Yes the LPG pressure in the tank will vary based on temp, I think it is like 50psig at 60F or something like that. To feed the appliance, the LPG has to vaporize (it's liquid in the bottom of the tank), and that will make the tank cool as it vaporizes, so it has to vaporize fast enough to keep the pressure in the tank at least what the appliance needs, which for LPG I think is typically 10psig.

I got my 75K a year ago as a scratch and dent. It was all cabinet damage, and just a few edges, all cosmetic. It was easily dollied out with a couple of ball peens and some bar stock for backup. Have to look for it know sitting 9 ft. up. They actually replaced a few louvers before sending it to me, so they must have been hammered. I don't "think" a dealer would let one out the door with any damage to the heat exchanger, valve assembly, circuit boards, etc. but you never know. Just be sure all of the vital components are okay before installing. Otherwise getting a great deal is a good feeling:bounce:bounce:

p.s. got mine through www.gas-space-heater.com

You can get a NG to LP conversion for $50 is you need one or the other (I switched mine to propane this winter)
I use a 100# propane with a propane gas grill reg (.5psi) I ran it for a few hours continuous last weekend (it was -5 outside and it was fighting to keep the garage at 65 degrees) and the regulator didn't freeze up or starve for gas so I am sure it will run well on a 100# propane.
I figured out the conversion, with a 100# propane it should be able to run approx 24-27 hours (a 75000 BTU anyway). I only run it when I am working though, so that should last me all winter (I hooked it up only a dew weeks ago).
I will probably finish running the NG line in the spring and convert it back (so I don't have to worry about filling the propane) but it works well on either!

How much is it to fill a 100# tank and do you get it filled at the same places that do the 20#? I was thinking of going with 2 tanks if i can find a deal on them.

I can't really answer that because I get from work,(welding supply store) so I pay cost on the gas (actually this first tank I didn't pay anything for)
If you look on the modine site, they specifically say you cannot run it on 20# cylinders. The withdraw rate is too high it will ice up the regulator. Hopefully someone else can give you a better answer on $

RV supply places probably sell and refill the larger cylinders too. Cost to refill will probably vary somewhat depending on where you have it done and where you live. In my area a 20lb refill varies from $13 to $20, so maybe a 100# would cost between $50 and $100? Note of course that the 100# cylinder is going to weight around 100 lb when full so you might need assistance moving it about.

You forgot to include the weight of the empty cylinder, so my guess is that it will weigh more like 150# when full. Propane is running around $3.00 a gallon and a 100 pound cylinder holds aproximately 23.4 gallons. A 20-pound tank holds about 4.1 gallons of liquid propane. Propane weighs 4.24 pounds per gallon at 60 degrees Fahrenheit

Ok, I wasn't sure if the cylinder nominal weight included the cylinder. I was thinking maybe it did because the thing at home depot for the 20# cylinders said something like 'net 17 pounds propane' or something. But wow yes, I looked at some 100# cylinders online and the empty weight is like 50-70# Holy hernia batman!

Boy, I think it says right one the Home Depot 100lbs tanks that they weigh close to 100lbs empty also. I thought about that but it seemed like to much work. I called my local gas company and had them drop a 120 GALLON tank, not lbs. They drop the tank for free and expect you to use one tank per year. If you dont use one tank they charge you a fee of about $80. Right now I pay $2.99 a gallon.

My unit showed up today. I left it at work but will bring it home this week and post some pictures to answer the "condition" questions.

I did notice that they just stuck it in a box with no packing material at all. A little disappointed by that.

Mine was like that as well, i think that's how they come from the factory and why they end up with so many dented ones.

Mine was good, but I paid $250 for a $500 heater from the greenhouse place. My hotdawg looked like someone poked the box hard with a fork truck and dented the top. I took a couple panels off and beat them back with a mallet and it was fine. still dented on the top some but it is ok and fully functional.

As for the 100lb tank, my tare weights are 70 and 74 lbs so a full tank is ~175lbs. I have a receipt sitting here from the last time I went to the co-opp and it was 61.99 for 100lbs plus tax (66.02 total), so about $2.80 gallon. That by far was the cheapest place in town I found, I had some over $80 for 100lbs. Empty tanks new cost about $100, but I scored 2 tanks each half full for $75 each from CL.

Finally got around to unpacking and taking a good look at the heater:

It appears that the unit was dropped on the right side (control side). I don't think it will be too much work to get it straightened out.

Looks about as good as mine did when i got it. Would it be better to run it off a single 100# tank or two of them?

Ive got the sealed chamber Modine 45 in my 22 x 30 garage and I love it. I had it put in 2 years ago. I think its just the right size. I set the thermostat at 50 and if I turn it up to 65 its there in minutes.
