Hi I am new to this forum and have a problem with my Hot Dawg model # 75 AHO174 heater. It works ok but does not heat as hot as it used to. I turned it on this weekend and normally heats my garage pretty fast. It has the normal code blinking and all the burners are lighting and everything looks like its working fine. When you stand in front of it it is warm but not as hot as it should be. The only thing that I see is that when it first lights up the igniter it gets red and after it lights the burners only the bottom of the igniter stays red, but that should not have anything to do with the heat. Any help on this would be appreciated. Thanks KWC

This is just a shot in the dark here. You might have gas pressure problems and not getting the required amount of gas needed for the listed BTU. If you look at the flame give a desciption. Color or is it dancing. Is the heater 2 staged? it could be the high heat valve isn't coming on. You need to maybe get the input and output gas pressure to see if there may be any problems with the gas flow or possible gas valve. Hope this helps some what.

Flame should be blue in color. If flame is orange could be low gas pressure. Also confirm you don't have any vent restrictions.

It is a single stage and the flame is, if I remember right, mostly yellow and strong, no dancing. The heater is up north so I will check the pressure when I go up next time. Thanks for the info

I agree with Dave, flame should be blue. When there you can look for pressure problems by using a manometer. Google homemade manometer they are very easy to make and this will let you test both incoming and outgoing pressure at the gas valve. While I agree a clogged or blocked vent can cause combustion problems usually it won't fire because of the pressure switch for the vent. If you are not comfortable checking pressures the gas company, HVAC, and perhaps a local plumber can check for you. You can find the procedure online to check pressures and the name plate inside the heater will tell you at what pressure it should be for both NG or LP. Hope this helps!

Those igniter's can crack and still light but not draw enough amps to open the gas valve all the way. Seen this often on gas stoves where the igniter would just barely open the gas valve. The only check is to see the amp draw on the igniter circuit and see if it's within spec for that heater. The stove igniters were to pull 2.75 to 3.25 amps to open the valve fully. Don't know what the spec is for the heater you have. It might be good to see what a new igniter cost and then try one if it's not very much.
I checked the gas pressure and it was good and the flame was blue and a little yellow at the end. I left the heater on for about four hours and it did come up to 70. Someone told me that when the heater gets older the gas valve sometimes sticks and does not open all the way when it is cold so that could be what happened. Thanks again for all your help.
