I want to get rid of the old speedo in my wifes 66 Volvo 122S
I need recommendations on which brand works well. I already know I'll need to fab a housing for it. I dislike the rectangle factory speedo plus it works like ****. I want a plain old round dial with a needle. No LED stuff.

I don't know that I could part with that stock speedo, it's definitely got a classic look that flows with the dash. I would just refresh what you have and go with that.

But really you've got to give us more to go on before recommending anything. What size you are planning, face/number/needle finish desired, electronic, mechanical, or gps? etc.

There are tons of options out there that work great, really it just comes down to finding the style and options you need.

Just after a basic speedo but was hoping for brand reviews so I can search through what they might have to offer.

Probably just a cable drive, old school speedo.

A brand recommendation can't be done here?

I'm not asking how to make it work correctly.

I have had great luck with Autometer (probably over 35yrs now)

They even have a custom shop to build you what you want if they do not have anything that will fit your needs.

Autometer has different quality levels also depending on what you want to spend.

Custom build your own online, then order!

A non issue getting one to work . .

Check out Autometer's GPS speedo also.

Classic Instruments , http://www.classicinstruments.com/ , makes great stuff and are very helpful people. I have used there stuff on several cars and have been happy with every gauge that I got from them. They have regular old gear driven speedos in many different styles or the more modern electronic speedos.

I have Autometer in my F-1 with chevy power. Dial type with sender mounted on the trans (TH350). Easy hook up.

I've got Auto Meter as well. Very good product and company. In my hot rod I'm running Stewert Warners. That is until I can afford Smiths. Not as high quality but they look so damn good. Plus I love the reverse read dial and the cresant tail pointers. Keith

when I did a conversion on sons S10 Blazer 4x4 I needed to convert to electronic.
I got a nice VDO electronic 4 inch. I then got a cable to electronic adapter that screwed onto the part where a cable would go and is wired to the new speedo.
You drive a measured mile and it calibrates it on a pulse per mile. Very easy to use and set.
Has trip ODO and is very easy to read at night.

I used Speedhut gauges in my Chevelle. They offer a GPS driven full featured speedo with all sorts of retro looks. I'm very happy with mine.
