Re: hot rod garage in the works.38x56

Can't even believe its already 2011 the time is just flying by and i think I am about a year off of my goal but still making progress.sometime even forwards.
going to try to get the new tubing bender stand and cabinet finished up as well as the buffer that I started about 6 months ago.:headscrat tryed to use the motor on the horizontal band saw and it did not have enough power:confused: so hopefully it will work on the buffer.next both of the band saw vfd drives.I am starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel. Hope its not a train again.:lol_hitti

Progress is looking good. You'll be done before ya know it.
Scott not shure what being done means but it does sound good to me.:headscrat lol.

I want to know if the Cherry bomb mufflers on the Air Intake do the trick?!
The cherry bomb mufflers do work awsome. I would bet it cut the noise down in half!!! between the incloser and the mufflers on the intake 75% of the noise dissapated.wish i did this along time ago!
Great shop,it's a credit to you.

Thanks for the words and the intrest. I have been cleaning and reorganizing forever it seems like hope to get it functional soon.:)

The mufflers are used for a air compressor intake . to quite the nose of the compressor down.I will see if I can find some picts of the sound enclosure for the compressor.both the air intake and the enclosure quite the nose at least 75%!!! no kidding you can stand right next to it and have a conversation with someone and not even raise your voice.hope to give you some more picts. this weekend.

Re: hot rod garage in the works.38x56

ok i found a couple of picts of the sound inclosure still need to paint the inclosure yet but it works awsome. the unit is hinged from the beam on the side and it has a single caster on the other end to carry the weight. drilled holes in the bottom and put soffit vents in the bottom to draw fresh air in .drilled two 6" holes on the top for two electric fans hooked up to a themastat dialed in to come on a 90* the idea was to draw the air from the bottom and put the air out the top. the inside was lined with egg carton foam and pieces of dynamat . next the paint!:)

started building a buffer awhile ago and hoping to finish it up soon so I can hook it up to the dust collection system.hoping to have booth saws going again by the end of the week.
Don't do this ever take both band saws down to replace the motors to vfd drives at one time if you are not ready to do it right away.bad idea :shocking:

E.rodz,

I'm in the burbs of Mpls. With the size of your garage, safe to say you're not in St Paul proper? Everything is looking great. Keep the updates coming.

Nice job so far on the buffer. I need to make one of those too, and I like your design. Did you put a left-hand thread on the left side spindle, or are you using that locknut to hold that side on? Is that a 1,725rpm DC motor or does it run up to 3,450? I hope you post some more pictures when you get it finished. Cheers, Bill

.had to get a varience to get all this aproved it was a pain in the azz. all my neighbors had to aprove it ,had to draw everything to scale, make pans for water run off,had to make shure the siding and the roof mached the house. all in all bldg permit was aproved for the full amount.i just asumed that they woud down size my plans so i went big to begin with then when they aproved the whole thing I was jumping for joy, until I was about half way home and thought to myself **** how am i goin to afford this?:wtf:

the motor is a 1750 rpm motor but any faster for a buffer will just burn the compound on it. just don't go out and buy a 3/4 hp yet until I can figure out if it will have enough power. I should have it done soon.

hi.. just glancing inward on your build... nICE... I was wondering about you dust system for paint fumes and the need to run a wire around the PVC to take care of static electricity (spark/exploison)... I know they do this with woodworking dust collection systems... also did you do anything in the duct work to prevent things from getting sucked through?

first of all there is two seperate systems one is for dust that most of it is made from pvc. that i ran a length of foil tape along the back side of the pipe and ran a tech screw into the steel duct to connect the ground to. I did nothing for sucking anything up so if it something gets near the suction pipe its going in, there is a cleanout at the bottom of the bottom run so if anything heavy gets sucked in it will fall down there and i can just uncap it and remove the object. the paint side is not quite done i will put filter media infront of the exhaust ports yet. hope this helps.

WOW! Very impressive, Just read the thread from beginning to the end. So creative, love the bench and the buffer. Its all paying off for you. I am sure all the work you put into the place really ramped up the value of the property.

Thanks for the info on speed. I have a small 6" double arbor Baldor buffer that is 1/4hp and runs 1800rpm. You can stall that also if you lean a part into it very hard. I would think 3/4" for 8" wheels would be enough power, but then maybe you're going with 10" wheels? Cheers, Bill

ps ... what about the thread on the left side spindle? LH or RH with locknut?

Saws are looking good there E ... and thanks for the confirmation on the left side nylock nut. That's what it looked like to me but I just wanted to confirm.

Just a cautionary observation bud ... you need to whip up a simple tin guard to cover that in-running nip at the buffer spindle pulley with that exposed belt before your son should be allowed to use it. It's one thing to get your own shirt sleeve caught in there and suffer the resulting pain it will inflict ... but it's far worse to see your son get his sleeve in there ... he's too young to see the danger! Just my $0.02 for whatever it's worth bro. Cheers, Bill

Re: hot rod garage in the works.38x56

Say there E ... I understand the satisfaction you get from building equipment ... I've built a lot of equipment myself over the years. But bandsaws are a lot of work to fab from scratch (I know, I've built a couple). With the currently economy, and I'm sure it's the same in the Twin Cities as it is in my town, there are lots of shops closing down and practically giving away their equipment. I have 4 bandsaws at the moment, with this DoAll ML 16 the latest one I picked up this summer for $400 from a shop closing. You can't build a saw like this for anywhere close to that IMHO.

let me just say you ****.:lol_hitti I was looking for a saw just like that for 2 years and was just shocked that i could not find anything like it for under 2500 bucks i constantly look on ebay and craigs list and i just can't believe that a milling machine and a saw are about the same price.I would love to get my hands on a saw like that. I am just sick of working on every piece of eqipment that I own.oh by the way the 3/4 hp dc motor does not have enough power thats why the guarding was not in place the pict was the trial run and a fail. but point well taken about the guarding.hoping to finsh all the eqip. up in the next couple of weeks.

Hey bud, don't stop watching CL or eBay ... but also watch for commercial auction sales in your area ... especially machine shops or plants that are closing/going out of business. Machine shop auctions attract a ton of guys like you and me and since the demand is high for the equipment in there, the price usually ends up high too. My favorite auctions are plants that are closing ... most people don't realize these plants have some pretty well equipped maintenance shops with all the good equipment in there ... and usually few of the bidders are interested in the machine shop stuff at these auctions. Ya get some great equipment for next to nothing! Bill

scored another craigs list project. like i needed another project but it was just so cool i could not pass it up. It is a 32" stomp shear made in 1898. :eyecrazy: just think when this thing was made there were not any cars or trucks that could haul it after it was made!pulled it all apart and going to go through it and make it function like new. I will post picts. up soon.

WICKED find on the old stomper!!! Just like you where shocked to see that bandsaw bought for $400, I'm ALWAYS surprised to see anything decent get bought used! I'm guessing it's one of the few drawbacks of living in a small (200Kpeople) city....

I thought your lean-to building was going to be a paint-shop? Is it actually gonna be a wood shop? Maybe both?

I have your shop saved becuase I'd like to put a lean-to like yours on my shop - for paint/priming and sanding work. Ihate getting all the dust and overspray on my lift/tools/nice cars....

Oddly though, wifey put the first-EVER "this-before-that" on it......I have to renovate the ensuite bath/walk-in closet before I start on the lean-to..... :(

yea the carport is a muti purpose 1/2 is a wood and dust creating machine combined with sheet metal tools and the other 1/2 is a make shift paint booth.I have been in this place for 16 years and it is the first time i have been able to section off a seperate paint area. I can't tell you how nice it is to paint something and walk out into another bay and work on something else.the master plan is starting to come togather!!
