I dont think water heater crud is any worse than lake crud.

As far as cold vs hot in the tank, where is the water heated from? The bottom. If the heater hasnt run in a while there might be a difference, but i bet its still hot enough to burn you. Its certainly not going to be cold

Look up "Laurentian Divide."
Also the Fox River in Wisconsin flows north from Portage to Green Bay.
Cleveland is at the mouth of a north flowing river whose name I cannot spell.
Toledo also.
The south branch of the Chicago River used to run to the north, but we fixed that.
