What brand did you buy?

My Navien has a built-in, insulated 'buffer tank'. I have not experienced any difference between this tankless and our old 75 gallon water heater.

What your talking about sounds like a 'cold water sandwich' - google it
I forget the brand. I know the old one was a Baxi from Italy.

I kind of agree with Innovate1's original response. If it was me, I'd want a control system to reduce both the pump run time and the heat loss from the loop.

If you're in a cold weather climate, I guess you could consider the heat loss a wash, because that loss is just going into the heated space anyway. But if you are running AC, then you're doubling up on your loss, because your loop loses heat to the building envelope, then you have to reject that heat to the exterior using your air conditioner.

Regardless of if was a pushbutton, smart switch, timer, whatever....a control system of some sort so the recirc system shuts down when not needed would be a huge plus.

A couple other things to run by you. The system is old and perhaps time to replace the WH’s. I represented Rinnai for 30 yrs and have always been blown away at the places people put water heaters. Easy for the builder, plumber, architect frequently means H-sh*t for the home owner as to comfort and economy. I suggest you take a moment and not perpetuate the mistakes of the original low cost bidder. In CA, while this winter has had abundant rainfall, drought in the west is the order of the day. Water conservation is more important than energy conservation, but the target is to conserve both. Perhaps it is time to relocate the water heaters closer to the point of use so you can skip the recirc all together. Given the cheapskate PO you may be throwing good money after bad. Resurrecting his failed system will likely equal his results. Relocation is easiest with tankless due to the size and venting capability. In Escondido you could easily go with the exterior unit. Rinnai makes a box that will insert into the wall and the WH is set in it. I have installed their pump equipped units with excellent results, IF yu have a good wireless signal. Push button located next to the K-sink, motion sensors in the bathrooms offer dramatic water reduction and improved comfort. You are kind of in the “hit and hope” spot installing a circ on the current system. If you do go forward with it please monitor the performance and report back on how it is working for you. this thread could have a long ways to go.

I appreciate the replies.

I'll do my best to keep this thread updated, as I am juggling a couple of other projects concurrent with this one.
