Hot water to garage

I hope someone can help. I have a detached garage. I am trying to get the hot water to the garage for the washer. All pipes and plumbing is hooked up. But all I have is cold water. People have told me I just need to turn the hot water on but can’t tell me where. Can any one help

Do you have hot water to the rest of the house?

If you have separate lines going to your water hoses for your washing machine, then find out where those lines connect to your existing system. There might be a valve at your water heater.

Are you saying there is cold water coming out of the hot water pipe in the garage?
Have you followed the pipe from the water heater to where it leaves the house to go to the garage looking for valves?
Maybe there are valves where the pipe enters the garage.

How far is the garage from the water heater? How are the lines installed? Why did you not install a water heater in the garage? Is the garage heated? Where are you located? We can't help unless you give us something to work with.

If there is water flowing from the hot line, and being that it's a detached garage, it might take a while to get warm.

I would be surprised if both hot and cold water are run to a detached garage unless it is very close to the house. First thing I would look at is where the water leave the house and where it enters the garage - are there two pipes or one? It may be there is a shut off in the house so the line can be blown out for winterization. Lots of questions. Need more information.

Cap off the hot water line, it’s useless unless it was an attached garage no matter how close it is to the washer.

Run tankless heater.

it will take a while for the hot water to push all the "now cold" water sitting in the piping.
the longer the run and colder the temp: the longer it will take.

just run cold and put a water heater in the garage.

I beg to differ my detached shop is 75' from the house where my boiler is, I have insulated underground lines running to shop for heat and hot water.
The 3/4'' hot has a 1/2'' re-circulation line with the re-circ. pump activated by an occupancy sensor. Works beautifully. Probably not the case in op's instance but set up right no need to have separate systems.

We need more information. So hot water was run to the detached garage from the house? If so, no water comes out of the hot valve?

I've got a 25'x25' detached garage and ran cold water only. I have washer and dryer in the garage. My water heater in the main house was going to be about 60' from the washer in the detached garage. I didn't bother running hot water to the garage. We have been using cold water only for washing machine, but recently added an electrical subpanel and also natural gas to garage. I will probably add a little 20 gallon water heater for the washing machine.
