House then garage build

Hey all, been lurking for a long time 6 years to exact and now I am starting the journey to build my own home with a lot of help from family and friends. This IS my first thread so bear with me as I learn how to do this. I realize that this is a garage forum but as long as everything goes somewhat according to plan I will be building a detached garage at the end. I have seen some cool projects come to life in this place and wanted to share mine with all of you. the house is going to be a cape style 28x38. The Garage will be either a 26x36 or depending on funds 30x40 ( im doing everything I can in order to have the money left for a 30x40 which is basically my dream.

A little back ground. My other half and I bought 5 acres in NH roughly 10 months ago. We will be doing as much of the work our selfs as we can, its a lot of work but its always been a dream of mine to build my own place. This past spring I began clearing and cutting the tress, over the next month we got things cleared enough to start digging up the stumps, I don't run big equiptment everyday so it was a blast to spend some quality time with an excavator and couldn't stop smiling. Once that was done I got to digging the foundation and realized very quickly Ledge was going to be my enemy... after scraping around for a few hours my stomach flipped up side down as I had to admit defeat as to the only way around the amount to ledge was to blast. (There is a picture of my dad and I looking down and all the ledge I had scraped away) Now we both had our hearts set on the specific location of the house so no matter what had to be done the foundation was going there. the cost of un forseen blasting really put a damper on our plans and had us at a stand still for a few months. On the flip side we had so much material from the blast that we were able to move it and extend out "lawn" another 60 or so feet out where the mountain was slopping away. We got the forms made for the footings and had them poured. This is when things really started to move for me, had a good friend pour the foundation, as it Sits now we are starting to frame on Saturday! I am going to try and post pictures of the progression so far.

Great progress so far. Excited for the journey you guys get to take. Ive always been jealous of mointain views but these pics make be glad to live in the nearly rock free portion of the Midwest. By that i only mean digging/subterranean building otherwise your area is pretty neat and possibly better than our 1000 mile corn field.

Thank you! were able to get it roofed yesterday which is somewhat a relief becuase winter is closing in on me fast here in New Hampshire. I will be doing most of the interior stuff as well, theres a few things that I will hire out in order to speed the process up a little. I am extremely lucky in that from my family/group of friends there is someone that does pretty much every trade and myself being in the HVAC field it makes it convenient. So for example for the wiring ill run all my lines, install all boxes and switches and get everything sorted and labeled and my cousin will come over to do the panel and check over what I have done to make sure I havent messed up to bad lol.

Nice project! It is going to be a beautiful home for you.

I have a question on the double stud build. I have seen it here in Washington State for sound attenuation in townhomes. Is it for additional thermal insulation?

Weaving the insulation between is not all that fun but if it gives you better isolation from the cold it will be worth it.

Cheers!

It is for thermal insulation, it creates essentially a complete thermal break from the outside to the inside (no wood will touch outside and inside, for example if you were to poke an imaginary hole any where from the outside to inside it would have to go through insulation at some point). There are a few different ways to achieve a complete thermal break but for me with the labor being "free" it was more cost effective go to the double stud way. It does create its own unique challenges but it will be worth it!

I'd expect, in the last almost three years you've made some great progress. Doing the garage yet?

Hey Riley! Sure did! Id say i finished about 4 years ago. I Ended up doing 30x32 with 13 ish tall ceiling. I am actually building a lean-to off one of the gable ends and it made me think of this fourm. I suppose working 50 hours at my day job and 50 hours building a house/garage didn't leave much left on the table for anything else. I'll post the only two pictures I currently have on my phone.
