House Door Handleset Locks

Does anyone know if these are universal? I am trying to avoid having to get a new door. I just want to replace the lockset. The one I have is by Master, but I can't seem to find a vendor for them nearby. The brands sold in Home Depot and Lowes' are from Kwikset. By handleset I mean this:
Handlesets

I am concerned about the distance between holes to mount the handleset.

Thanks,

Mike

Zarcero,

You'll need to know the hole diameter, door thickness, and backset. (Distance from the door edge to the center of the lockset mounting hole. 2 3/8" or 2 3/4" being standard)

Most locksets and handle sets are somewhat universal. That is to say, they will accept different door thicknesses, allow some leeway in the mounting hole diameter (which is standardized, although not always cut to the standard size), and adjust to the common backset dimensions.

The pitch between the mounting hole and bottom screw location is not standardized except within brands and model series. Try to get a handle set that matches or covers the hole pitch.

I like the Schlage locks better than the Kwikset. They're better quality and install much easier. Of course they cost more too!

For sure go with the Schlage as Kwikset and Weiser have had issues with their latches jamming which means you cant open the door. Make sure it has a universal backset which is common. The hole at the bottom of the handle is either 7 or 9" for most residential. As long as you line them you are ok.

I found a locksmith shop that was able to repair the old handleset. Cost was about $35. The door is as good as new
