One quick question about return air. Would it help to take return air off the floor or ceiling. Most of my return ducts are high with 1 large one closer to the floor. Was thinking about downsizing the larger one(about 16" x 10") thats about a foot off the floor. I know this will help for summer a/c, but what about winter heat? The new size would be about 16" x 4"(or 3 or 5 or whatever).

Joey your returns and supplies should be matched to provide proper airflow for your system and downsizing one especially what sounds like the main return could result in improper airflow in your system.

Im adding a 6" return duck going to outside fresh air, so i can afford to shrink that down if it helps. Plus I have about 500 cfm more of return than I do supply. And I can easilly make adjustments to either side of the system since my basement is unfinished

I have one duct that has a upper and lower intake vent, the upper vent have a manual damper.
In the summer, I open this damper and in the winter it's closed.
Maybe, manual dampers are a answer for you...this way you can have the best of both worlds!
