Sorry for the non-garage question, but there’s always a lot of knowledge on here..

Is it feasible/ possible to have a fireplace that has a gas insert on one side ( this would be on the inside of the house) and a wood burning fireplace on the opposite side (this would be in a covered porch area).

Just trying to find a way to be as efficient as possible with wish-list features. Please delete if too off-topic.

Thanks

You cannot have a single flue for wood AND another fuel, so yes you can have back to back units but you will need independent flues for each. As you are likley looking at a direct vent gas unit you should have separation between the two terminations. Otherwise you can draw the smoke from the fireplace into the gas unit and it will not go well, in a lot of ways.

Thank you- You clarified it much better than I asked it...will definitely help to manage expectations as we go forward.

Thanks!

We installed a gas direct vent fireplace (58 concentric flue) and ran the flue for our gas boiler (B-vent) up through the same chase to the roof. IIRC the fireplace mfg provided specs for the difference in height for the two flues so that the direct vent wouldn't pull in exhaust from the boiler flue. I'm not sure whether they had any info about spacing from a wood fireplace termination.

Another option I looked at was running the gas fireplace flue up into the ceiling joists and across to the exterior wall with a wall thimble there. But I decided it was just simpler to run both flues completely vertical. The 58 concentric vent is also 8" in diameter and you need at least 2" clearance above and 1" clearance under and to the sides of a horizontal run. I would have needed to box in a drop-down chase going out toward the exterior wall because my 10" joists would not provide enough vertical clearance for the 58 pipe.
