Household & shop tools storage

Ok, so I want to separate the household tools (basic pliers, screwdrivers, etc) from MY tools and my tool box (HF 44"). That way when anyone in the house needs a tool they can just go to that tool box / storage vs mine. I am going to drop some made in china tools, etc in that one (cheap stuff), so if they leave it around the house, never put it back, lol, etc.. I will probably keep 1-2 of the drills / electric screwdrivers in there.

I thought of just using a small tool box that can be carried around the house, but it all might not fit in there. I picked up two pink tool boxes on Sale at Sears last week, for just this, I think.

How do you guys have your tools separated, if you do at all? I just hate going to grab a wrench to work on the car and have to rummage through the household tools.

I keep several Klein zipper bags in the closet. Each is marked with a Sharpie as to what's in it. I have one each for screwdrivers, wrenches, and cutters. They're filled with cheap import tools because no-one in my house takes care of, or returns, my tools when they're done with them. These bags, kept up in the house, keep the rest of my family from going into my shop and stealing my good tools.

They don't have to contain complete sets, because they're only needed for small quick jobs. Just fill them with the basics. Any job that requires more tools is either done by me with the good tools, or supervised by me so they don't ruin the tools from my shop.

The bags take up less space than a toolbox, and can be hidden on a shelf in the closet so they're not in the way when not used. When needed, you only need to find the bag that has the tools you need in it, and not drag the whole collection out to get lost.

For household tools, one of the canvas rigs that goes into and over a 5 gallon bucket works well. There is often a metal loop inside to hold a drill motor. Plenty of pockets and such and everything is visible.

I have a separate tool box for inside the house. It'a Keter from Walmart and it holds some pliers, adjustable wrenches, screwdrivers, allen wrenches, etc. Think of what you want it to do without going into your main box. I want to be able to tighten a doorknob, hang a picture, loosen a p-trap, remove a shower head, change the propane tank on the grill, etc. Anything more than that, I'll go to the garage and get my bags and load up. The wife appreciates this too, as everything in there she is capable of using. Don't try to make it a miniature version of your garage, just keep it simple and have things in there you might need for menial tasks.

I have my old craftsman roll cab full of all household tools. I keep my big 56 in roller full of my garage tools.... No difference in quality of tools, i just don't want to have to search for a tool when i am working on my cars

I use a variety of methods.

First, I try to set up a container for each type of task, I.E.:
Carpentry
Plumbing
Electrical
Concrete/Masonry
Yard Work
General

Then I use whatever container is most appropriate.
These include:

Cloth tool bags
Rigid tool bags
Trays
Totes
Bins
Hand carry plastic or metal toolboxes
Milk Crates
Plastic or Cardboard Banker Boxes
Buckets

I put them where they are easy to grab for the intended uses.
I will be doing more to label these.

I have one of the Craftsman 4 drawer carry boxes that sits on top of the dryer located next to the entrance to the garage. Basic pliers, screwdrivers, hammer, small wrenches, outlet tester, free harbor freight volt meter, Teflon tape, picture hangers, ect. Keeps everybody out of my big boxes and its easy to get to to put things back.

The wife took over an old tackle box and slowly added the tools she used around the house on a regular basis. So far I haven't really missed any of the tools when I've been working in the garage because most of them were duplicates.

I keep this box in the back of my laundry room. I am always messing with something at the house and would be a hassle having to walk down to the shop to get what I need. Really the best use for this Cornwell box. Too small for a real toolbox and too big to be a cart. Doing double duty as this will also be my oldest son's box and it is fully stocked already with more tools than most first year mechanics have.

I have several boxes in different locations outside my shop. I made the Mrs. a box for the household tasks she tackles. Basics; hammer, screw drivers, adjustable wrenches, pliers and the like. She also has a 12 volt cordless drill in the house box. I keep another box of similar size in my travel trailer full time. I have a 4 drawer Craftsman box I made into a fairly serious travel box for my truck. I can do quite a bit with it and it's mostly fairly decent tools inside. Since we live on a farm I keep a pegboard full of HF tools in my shop that any of my kids or wife are free to use whenever. The 2 big boxes are mine and are off limits to all without me being there.
