nice cabinets Rick, I must admit I was a little disappointed in the before pic's I thought for sure a hvac guy would some ductwork laying around getting in the way, maybe at least a few drive cleats............lol .........although I think I did see a jug of 22 in there.
looks good

:D Extra ductwork is in the shed although I will admit to drive slides and cleats being hidden all over the place in here the funny thing to drives and cleates is they love to fall over or slide down onto the floor on a regular basis :D.

Well its been a LONG 2 years I guess its time to bring the garage back out of the moth balls :D. I am in the process of rearanging everything for the third time since I started this plus cleaning soot off the walls and ceiling as I go so I have everything more or less moved to the center of the garage while I clean and rearange . Hopefully I get the arangement right this time :D.

First pic is the left rear corner where I started desooting :D. Second pic is the direction I am heading in and the last pic is the new seating/chill zone . Mind you the melted mini blinds are on the oposit side of the garage from the basement stairwell so yes it did get a little warm up here even though the fire was in the basement .

LOL RL oatmeal creme pies dont last long in this garage my 20YO daughter reminded me again today that I go through about a box a week " although they dont see SWMBO sneaking them in the night when she comes out for a smoke " . The fridge was quite a find was doing some AC work for a neighbor in her basement and noticed it sitting down there . She told me that she and her husband had baught it new in 1957 and that it had been sitting down there for at least 10 years. I offered to trade her a lightly used AC unit for it with the understanding that her grandsons needed to haul it out of the basement for me " those dang old things are HEAVY " . She accepted and here it sits . I need to rewire it as the old wires have become brittle with age but otherwise it is all there and in great shape . I also intend to repaint it this winter . The fridge I want is a mid 50's Philco V handle ( one of the kewlest old fridges out there ) . I will find one someday that I can afford :D.

Haha YES! That would be considered a 'quest' fridge. And you are 100% correct and accurate. It is the coolest old fridge out there, able to open up in both directions.

Aren't the cab and bed one piece on some unibodys?

The cab and bed are one piece on all unibodies :D thus the unibody name . They were built from 1961-1963 .They were built on the same frame as the other trucks but the body itself was one piece . Ford made 3 differant body styles from 61-63 the unibody , the flareside ( stepside ) and what we refer to as the wrongbed styleside which had a seperate bed that looked like the bed that was on the 57-60 trucks . I actually have 2 of them but the 63 longbed is slated to give its life to the 62 shortbed.

Wow it looks so terrific! I have been looking for used metal kitchen cabinets forever or last two years. You really lucked out, how did you paint them? Are you still going to add galvanized sheet to the counter top? Keep up the great work, Couchmechanic out.

Couchmechanic I sprayed them with a smaller detail gun with Ford blue tractor and implement paint from Tractor supply. You might try what I did I put an add on craigslist in the wanted section and 3 weeks later I had more cabinets than I could use . I still have 3 base cabinets up on the loft that I probaly will end up giving away as I have other plans for that area .All of the cabinets came from one guy who had picked them up free planning to use them in his garage and he changed his mind so I got them :D.Yes I still intend to cover the counters with galvanised at some point . I still have some cabinets to paint as you can see the single drawer unit isnt painted yet and since I added it I need to paint the side of the cabinets on either side of it :D.

It's nice to see the cabinet overspray came off the floor. Those cabinets will last a few more lifetimes.

Sorry to hear about your setback. Most times a basement fire takes everything above it with it. Glad to hear you were lucky on that end. I haven't had to experience any of this clean-up, but trying all the products on the market will find the one that works on 2-year old soot.

Nice score on the Fridge. It would be a nice piece for any shop. And its nice to see your priorities are right with a TV area (even with Jim Cantore on the screen)

Very sorry to read about your setback from the fire. Thanks very much for the tip on the paint color. Those cabinets are the WTF Cat's Azz.

Jeff The fire actually did take pretty much everything above it :D. the fire was centered in the laundry room downstairs which is below the kitchen and dining room . I had to gut both rooms from the floor joist to the ceiling and replace all of it including the floor joists . I also gutted the bathroom next to the dining room and rebuilt it from the floor joists up . The basement had 3 bedrooms in it and is now just one big open room at the moment as we now only have 2 out of 5 kids still living at home 3 out of 5 grew up and moved out :D. I was actually happy to find the purple power did such a good job on the soot in the garage although I think if I had chosen anything other than gloss and semi gloss finishes out here the cleanup would have been much worse . The fire was actually February a year ago so I rebuilt the inside of the house first with a couple of freinds helping when they could and now its the garages turn . The sitting/TV area is needed since SWMBO and I both smoke and neither of us smoke in the house :D.

Chris I figured you would like the paint color choice being a ford guy. The paint on the cabinets has actually held up quite well and has actually cleaned up pretty easy with some hand cleaning wipes I get from HVAC supply houses .I used Naptha to thin it for spraying and enamel hardener both of which are also available at Tractor supply.

Well one more wall pretty well done other than painting some cabinets .

Also found an old vise that was given to me that will most likely require a nice soaking in an electrolitical bath .

I still have quite a bit in the middle of the garage to stick somewhere :D and we have yet to address the loft above the stairs " its skeery " .

Rick,
I understand COMPLETELY! I've actually sold quite a lot of tools (I go to flea mkts now and then, and I've had a yard sale or two). Every time I get the chance, I sell the lower quality tools at bargain prices...ESPECIALLY if someone gathers up a small pile and makes an offer. But I love the "hunt" so much, that I have to keep moving stuff out, to make room for new stuff coming in. The trick (for me) is to keep stuff that thrills me, and add it to my own collection.

Maybe one day I'll be just like Jack (Packard V8), with a large collection of very high quality tools, at very little investment.

I like to buy low and sell high and upgrade as I go :D. I picked up an older craftsman oxy/acet rig this summer with small tanks ( B sized acetalene ) with 2 extra B size acet tanks and one extra oxygen for $200.00 all together and have them listed for $300.00 now . Then I managed to find a newer Harris setup with MONSTER bottles for $100.00 so when done the Harris set should be free if I get full asking for the Craftsman set :D.

RL I honestly havent found a name on the monster other than a partial sticker on one side that I can read " Gre " on . I may get lucky and find a name as I get to playing with it . I have been playing with the metal lathe for the last couple of nights so no progress on the shop other than keeping it up to its current state and not backsliding . I did manage to fill another toter :D.

Ya know Rick, sometimes making no progress is actually progress in disguise. As long as one is not taking steps backward, might as well be as good as moving forward:D

-RL...who recently had to spend a Saturday all-day cleaning out the garage for the umpteenth time just because things accumulate.

Rick, Being in the garage and getting your hands dirty IS progress. Working on tools getting your hands dirty is a BONUS!

For the vice, I have been amazed at the vice experts we have here. Post a shot of the vice and one with the sticker and someone may just have the year, make and model and can tell you what plant it was forged in. These guys are good here. Let them do the leg work.

Rick, just found your garage. I love those metal cabinets. And I'm kicking myself right now because I found a set of 16 metal kitchen cabinets for $200 that I contemplated. After seeing how great yours came out I'm wondering if I could still get those and stick them some where.

Well I dont know how long its been since you looked at them but I would say if they still have them offer them a picture of Ben for them if they dont take it walk away :D . I got mine free just by asking for them in the wanted section of craigslist . All I did was sand them with an electric DA sander and shoot some paint on them not hard at all and I am happy with them . I will be building cabinets for the loft as I want to get the max storage I can up there :D. I guess I could get some pics of the loft up here tonight although as I have said " its skeery " up there :D.

Oooohh, I want that:). I keep looking but no luck yet. Don't worry, Kentucky is a bit far away for me:D. I still have the JET bench dp that I got when my
Dad passed away. It's a great, really heavy duty press but I need to get an art deco one too. My garage is shrinking:(.

Funny Dave AKA Red Leader had the same reaction to the lights :D.

Rick

It's ALL about the attachments! The vari-slow drill press attachment! The scroll saw mini-fence system attachment! The Delta 'retirement lamp' attachment! The drill press pully cover attachment! The unisaw tenoner attachment!

Old tools are fun, but wait till you see all the goodies that come with them!

VERY nice score on those tools. I'm betting that you will be enjoying them for YEARS to come!

Rick, those Craftsman tools bring back so many memories. Growing up, that's all my grandpa had. He came to the US from Ireland when he was 8 years old, did the military thing, and when he retired, he worked at sears part time....and man what a collection of the deco tools! Made me smile seeing that drill press. It's still in my dad's shop. Looking good man! And BTW, I'm a flight medic out of Birmingham, AL as well. Small world.

Kanticoy I am glad they brought back some good memories for you . I will have to admit though I am not a flight medic :D I own an HVAC company called Airmedic Mechanical. I used a used ambulance years ago for a service truck and all the supply house guys thought it was funny to call me the " airmedic " . The name stuck and I still use it :D. You should take a look at Red Leaders garage it will bring back memories for you as well .He is the king of " art deco tools " around here .
