I think it's a raccoon cleverly disguised in a cat suit. JetLinkin was the only one who spotted the zipper!

Well heres a little project for today sofar . I stole this from here on the GJ although I couldnt find where I found it originally. I have files yes lots of files and no room to store them laying flat buuuuut they cant be stacked as its bad for them . Solution take a 5'-6' piece of #12 romex and seperate the wires . Find a piece of 3/4" PVC pipe and wrap the wire around the pipe. Then spread out the rings slightly and now I can store my files standing on edge . I went ahead and made a pliers rack while I was at it the same way and put 2 drawers worth of pliers into one drawer . This gave me 2 drawers for the files :D.

Rick

Consider this one restolen(if that is a word). I've been needing a way to store my pliers better and this looks like the perfect solution.

Ok enough Racoons and Cats :D . Todays things . Well first off the old T100 finaly hit 1/4 million :D. Then when I got home tonight I decided to make some chips rather than clean . So I made a fresh mess and a new Flashlight :D. This one is made out of 9/16" brass round bar unlike the others that were made from 1/2 " brass hex bar :D.

Jeff I actually found a tutorial online on making these ( I was looking for little projects to make with my recently aquired toy lathe ). I read the tutorial several times and watched the videos and started collecting materials . The LED's and Watch batteries came from Hong Kong in 100 packs the rest was sourced locally . I picked up a 4' stick of 1/2" brass hex rod from a local supplier ( which was the most expensive part of the project ) :D and just started making them this weekend . The main thing I have found from using my little 1940's craftsman lathe is I now want a bigger old American made lathe now :D.Oh yeah and a benchtop mill :D.

Rick

Okay, okay, I guess I have the watchmaker's lathe and now I feel the fingers on my back saying "build something with it". How about some links?

Oh, and for those lurkers.... The lathe I have came with drill bits down to 0.003" or was that 0.0003"? Anyway if I drop that drill bit I'll have to get a magnet to find it.

It also came with an X-Y table and a whole bunch of other LITTLE BITTY stuff. I've been looking for a project to do with this.

MD heres a link to the full writeup on the flashlights including 4 great video's showing how to make them . Theres alot of other neat stuff on the website as well but the flashlights are fun and other than the brass quite inexpensive to make . I have invested ( other than brass ) $2.99 for 100 LED bulbs with free shipping from hong kong , $10.50 for 100 CR927 batteries with free shipping again from hong kong , 6' long 1/2" plastic rod from Grainger $7.00 . The brass is the killer I think I paid $45.00 for a 4' stick of 1/2" hex bar and around $20.00 for a 2' stick of 9/16 round bar.

Thanks for the link. Looks like an interesting project. I'll have to see if I can do that on this watchmaker's lathe.

Love the new toy Rick. You're going to have flashlights all over the place!

Yeah, I just showed the flashlights to SWMBFAO. She started complaining about me already having too many flashlights around.

Thank you :D . Actually the flashlights dont last long seems they dissapear almost as fast as they are finished :D. Although I guess when everybody I know has one they will start to pile up . I actualy use one regularly to navigate the house at night so I dont have to turn on lights and disturb anybody .

Ok say it with me now FREEBY :D. I had a customer who's father recently moved to an assisted living home and said customer is working on clearing out and fixing up dad's house to put it on the market . When I was there earlier this summer recharging the AC system I noticed an old vice on a workbench near the furnace . I asked about it and they were not sure at that time what they were going to do with it . Sooooo yesterday I went back to install an evaporator coil ( what was leaking the freon ) and he says to me if I can get the vise off the bench aaaaand up the stairs its mine as he knows I wil take care of it . So pictures follow of my new Yost model 204 machinests vise . I actually did a little digging last night and was amazed that they are still being made and :shocking: what they are going for today . The plus to everything is the new ones are painted a nice dark almost ford blue so this one will be getting a coat of Ford Blue engine enamel :D.

Nice score! I keep searching for a really good second hand vise to replace my newer so-so craftsman 6", but just can't seem to land one. Maybe someday.

Well, a son/daughter should visit their mom every chance they get! :)

What do the other two look like? I might be interested if they're not too big - don't want to damage that support column its mounted to :D

Ok kewl thank you GirlnAgarage that means I got the shape right :D. I was using an 8 ounce bottle as a model and taking measurements from it . The actual bottle is 8" tall the flashlight is only 2" :D.

My next guess was something to do with genie in a bottle

That looks really good though. I was just marveling at the smoothness of the surface through the contours. Don't know how you do it but I think that takes some skill.

Well lets just say after getting it shaped where I want it . I start with 180 grit sanding cloth bump up to 240 grit . Then I work through from 500 grit wet/dry paper " dry " up to 2000 grit . Then I start the actual polishing on this one I used a microfiber cloth and metal gloss polishing compound with the lathe spinning at about 600 RPM. Ya hafta watch your fingers real close when doing this :D.

It's really 8"? It seems small.

:spit: The pic is deceptive. I guess I keep thinking about bullets for the little flashlight on the left. I always have .45acp all over the place so my brain reverts to that.

When you polish, you do all that right on the lathe right?

I hear you on fingers. I burnish leather edges and often run my fingers against the dowel or drum when working. It's not so bad. But I have to be careful in the garage with blades. That would be bad.

Nice score Rick. Great story, too!

I can see that restored and the name hand painted. Looks great.

FYI, I have a couple 2" souvenir Coke bottles on the shelf that would have been perfect to copy. Keep an eye out for some for next time. It turned out beautiful and she will love it!
