Well we spent the weekend in a hotel and finished the new hardwood in the kitchen and dining room :D. SWMBO finally got the poly on those floors while I started installing the new ductwork for the HVAC system for the house :D. Winter is comming so time to get the heat in :D. Will be back on the garage next week .

Well heres the latest flashlight :D. Anybody recognise the shape . I'll give you a hint SWMBO has a birthday comming up and she has a sizeable collection of this stuff in the house .

Rick
Those little flashlights would make great stocking stuffers for the holidays too! Very nice.

Rick, I love those cabinets...I am trolling CL for those and some vintage tools. Glad the fire didn't destroy everything...still a pain I know.

Umhm, in a hotel because of "new floors and duct work".

The Kitchen and dining room block access to the back of the house .The entry from the garage goes into the kitchen and the dinning room goes past the livingroom all the way to the hall sooooooooo. This means that you cant get to the bedrooms or bathroom . With 4 women in the house ( SWMBO , MIL , 16YO daughter , 20YO daughter aaaaaaaaaaand 2 YO grandson ) not being able to go from the garage or living room to the bedrooms or bathroom was going to be a problem :D .

Personally I can find a tree :D and have slept on my workbench ( after the fire ) . The womenfolk however require access to a bathroom so hotel it was . SWMBO did 4 coats of poly on the floors between friday night and saturday night and we were back in sunday . The ductwork didnt make much differance on them being here or not but needs to be done aaand got me out of doing the poly . ( Besides SWMBO doesnt like the way I do poly :D.)

Shaun I put an add on CL in the wanted section for the cabinets and honestly it took 3 weeks to get a reply but when I got one needless to say I still have some cabinets I havent figured out what to do with or painted :D. The other thing I have heard is to talk to Kitchen cabinet companies about them as usually when they do a replacement the old cabinets end up in their dumpster and they would be happy to have someone haul them off rather than filling their dumpster . One other option would be if you have a Habitat restore in your area . We have one here in Louisville but I have yet to see metal cabinets in it .

LOL did I mention 4 women in the house if I was to plan a get away I would leave all of them HERE :D:D.

Rick

I agree.... I call that disappearance DEER SEASON..... SWMBFAO doesn't mess with that. That's time for all the guys in her life to GO AWAY. She's got two girlfriends that are here ALL the Frickin' time. Add to that each of them has a daughter (one age 13, one age 2) and I've got eight people in the house. Three of those are normally telling me what to do (adult females), one is trying to tell me what to do (teenager girl), and one just busy. The two teenage boys are playing video games and hiding in the back bedroom. If I can sneak out (garage, hunting lease, bar, ...) I do.

Oh, and did I say that one of them just got married so we HAD to help with the wedding (and still hanging around my house:confused:) and NOW MIL is getting married and my dining room is FULL OF WEDDING CR!@#$P for the SECOND TIME and stories of how CUTE something is or how she HAS to have something.....:headscrat

Sorry, Just letting you know I can empathize with you man. Oh, and all those females think I have cash for them when they get a little bit short.

Rick,
Love all the flashlights, I guessed coke as well but my second guess was a 70's lava lamp lol. Would love to see the patina on the brass ones in 20yrs.

Thanks dave . I honestly kinda hope that the new owners of the flashlights will keep them polished up over the years . Although now you have me thinking about chemically giving one an early patina and clearcoating it for another look :D.

So Rick where are the in-process shots of the flashlight tubes being made? Also, I'm not sure I've seen your lathe setup! I need pictures so I can be inspired to start wanting one as well haha:)

Dave there are pictures of the Craftsman a few pages back buuuuuut . I will have to admit I ended up selling the craftsman as it wasnt as precise as I would like and for some odd reason people will pay stupid money for them in good shape :D. I ended up picking up a used HF 7X10 for $150.00 after selling the Craftsman for $300.00 . The HF oddly enough is much more precise and since its not my last lathe and only something to play with for now it works well. I will find a Southbend next summer hopefully that I like with a price I like as well. I will try to get a few in process pics this weekend while making another light .

What RL said. I'd like to see the in-process shots too. You've got me on a lathe quest too:). I might go the HF route too for now.

What would be a good price for a Southbend??

Paul Southbend 9" lathes ranhge anywhere from $450.00 for a basic lathe with manual change gears ( mostly used for threading ) all the way up to $2000-$2500 for a really really nice model A example ( which has a built in gearbox ) with all the goodies including a milling attatchment . There were basically 3 9" models A,B and C . The A model has the gearbox built into it the B and C models are manual where you have to take gears out and put differant ones in . There is also a light 10 " 10" " and a heavy 10 model . Personally for home shop use I think a 9" is plenty . I will get some in progress pics this weekend for you guys but I did put a link in here somewhere to a set of 4 videos showing how they are made by the guy who started making them first .

The 9" that Dave put the picture up of is a Model A if you look at the lower left portion of the machine there is a box with a couple of levers that you change to change what gears are working .

Paul the only thing I can really tell you about mils at the moment is the Bridgeport is the Mill that all other aspire to be . The saying is that a Bridgeport Mill is the only machine out there that can duplicate itself ( which I would assume to be true for any good mill ) .I have actually been meaning to ask 44 what model his bridgeport is as the pic of him working on it makes it look tiny compared to any bridgeport mill I remember seeing . Which to me would make it a perfect size for a home shop milling machine :D.

Hey Rick, I wanted to thank you for the idea of posting a wanted add for metal cabinets on CL, Craigslist. Found some very cheap with a little rust and have started sandblasting and prepping for paint. Hope to have all the prep work done in a week and one good day to paint. Thanks for the idea and inspiration. Couchmechanic out!

You know, my dad actually has an old (I think 1960s) Clausing lathe. It is around a 12" swing I believe. Nice lathe. We used it this past December to turn down the rubber outfeed roller for my Yager/K-Line planer.

Yes, rubber. We stuck it in the freezer overnight:D

Clausing also made very nice lathes :D. So you already have experiance with a good lathe :D. I turn a soft plastic with mine all the time to make one of the flashlight parts :D.

Unfortunately, I feel like everything my dad has taught me about operating a lathe I've seemed to forget. I really do want to make sure I know what the heck I'm doing before forging ahead. I feel like I'll need to watch him about 10 more times. He is a true craftsman with it.

There is that whole issue of stopping the moving cutting bit assembly before it makes gentle contact with the spinning head chuck:D

Boy, that takes me back to my high school days - careless students were always jamming that bit into the workpiece. Absolutely no respect for the tools! What were they thinking???

Heh that's what I thought about when working with my imaginary lathe, sticking a tool in there and catching it and breaking it. I've never even been around a lathe or seen one work. Well, except on tv.

So Rick I dunno if it is you and the rest of the crew rubbing off on me, but I'm in correspondence with a lady about a lathe for sale. Was her ex-husbands.

I can't promise anything right now. I don't know what type of lathe it is or even who made it, but she said that it was older and heavy. Both very good signs:D

I'll let you know what it leads to.

Btw, any contact from that guy who had the Craftsman 109 scroll saw?

Awesome. I'm eagerly anticipating hearing about it!

I'll let you know what I find out about the lathe. Maybe it would turn out to be that 9" South Bend! Sometimes there is no telling and sometimes it is the most obscure listings that yield the greatest reward:). These type of ads (i.e. "I dunno what it is...belonged to someone else and I want it gone") are some of the most surprising and funnest to check out.

Keep your fingers crossed!:fingersx:

Okay so I found out it is a wood lathe (part of me was hoping for a metal lathe, oh well!) and it might be one of these, still waiting on confirmation from the seller:

..which could be very cool. But, I have no idea what condition it is in or what it may come with. More details to come!

So if we all got together and went tool shopping, we'd probably need a bigger truck to haul back the goods. Is that right?

Um Dave that picture is not of a wood lathe :D. I would say its a very early turn ( of the last century ) lathe but not a wood lathe :D.

Yep, the picture is of an old metal lathe. Note that the cutter head is set on a screw feed. Most wood lathes don't have that.
