Why?!? Doesn't make much sense to me...5 less wrenches.

Tekton 8-22mm $35 shipped
Gearwrench 8-22 $60 store pickup or shipping $ based on location
Toptul 10-19 $70 shipped

Is there something I'm missing here? To get the same number of wrenches you're into Wright and SK prices, and if you're looking at imports, you can get more wrenches at significantly less cost that are very good wrenches (I've used all of the alternatives listed). I just don't see any reason to buy Toptul

^^^^^ WTF are you saying!!!!! You are making no sense to me
OP, I think anything would be a step up to pliers and an adjustable. For decent money/tools grab a "kit" at HD, Lowes, Menards, True Value, or any box store. You can have a selection of sockets, wrenches, screw drivers, and pliers. Will they be Carlyle quality? No, but it will sure get the job done for what he is doing.

I have to agree though, a basic box store kit $50 to $100 is what the kid needs and should serve him well as a starting point they are not too hard to find.

Yet I would want him to have long pattern wrenches in his kit short wrenches are a back of the toolbox drawer second choice kind of thing, only needed when there is an extreme lack of space to maneuver.

Do It Best sells wrenches under the Channellock brand that are identical to the Carlyle long pattern wrenches for $50:https://www.doitbest.com/products/309443?via=57c72fea69702d410a003cf7,57c7305669702d410a00406b.

I have a couple of examples of both and they are identical.
And neither of them made the wrenches. The factory in China or Taiwan undoubtedly has slapped many names on them, probably with some selling for even less than the Channelocks. If you want a reality check, go to Alibaba and look at what items you pay big bucks for. If you buy in any quantity the price drops to zip. The fuel pump for my car, which is definitely imported, is in the mid 200's from Rockauto, from several brands. If you import at least 100 direct from China they are 10 bucks a pop. And you thought HF was giving it away? They get it almost free.

You said it right. I recently traveled to China and found that a set of Harbor Freight brake tool set ($49.99) is only $5 with FREE SHIPPING in China. Harbor Freight actually has very good profit margin and people think they are "cheap".

For that price... you can also pick up something like this...

Blackhawk Combination Wrench Set (11 Pieces) Metric 12-Point
$44 shipped...

Sorry to diverge from the Carlyle wrench set question... Just that I picked up some of these for my brother and they were sweet. Made me think I should've kept them and given him my USA CM/Kobalt/Allen/KD set... :bounce:
