How are the Knipex Alligator Pliers? Are they better than Channellock's Pliers?

winlinmac,

Here are a couple past GJ threads on the subject:

- LINK1

- LINK2

By the way, here are some words of advice from a long time GJ member. If you want to live by your signature line, it would be best to use the search feature. There are existing threads that will answer your questions and make it unnecessary for you to re-post similar tool related questions. I think the old threads are way more informative than the new threads. If you keep reading the old threads, grow your knowledge, and ask questions in existing threads; you will slowly gain credibility and respect amongst GJ members.

Alligators are solidly made pliers that are a pleasure to use. I actually prefer them over the push button cobras. They are available in a wide range of lengths to handle any job. Their jaws are shaped to grip round or hex shaped items with ease. Once you use them, you won't go back to another brand of pliers.
Be sure to get the original Knipex made ones though. There are many imitations out there.

I have a couple pairs of the Knippex Cobra pliers; I really like them. I still use my Channellocks for some tasks, but I use the Cobras more often for work. The size of the Cobras makes them easy to carry. The Cobra pliers are so easy to adjust too, compared to Channellocks. I haven't tried the Knippex Alligators yet.

I generally reach for my Cobras first, Channellocks second, and my Alligators 3rd. Maybe it's just me, but when I go to adjust the Alligators, I keep missing the adjustment slot the first time or two.

In short, awesome. I actually prefer them to the cobras and they are in a different class than anything channellock makes.

Maybe, just maybe? The fellow wanted to know the present companies viewpoint on those pliers? Not some write up five years back. Just a thought?

There were two threads in the last month. Maybe, just maybe, people are lazy. Just a thought?

If you like channel locks you will like the alligators. The adjustment is kind of similar, you open the pliers and pick the "slot" that will fit. The grip is very positive, with hard, sharp jaws and really even clamping force because of the way the handles hinge. There are a lot more adjustments than channel locks. The cobras have even finer adjustment and you dont have to open the handles to adjust.

Uh, no. :headscrat
This is the only account I use to post and discuss on the Garage Journal.
I'm sure there are trolls that actually exist on this forum.
The search function leads to viewpoints that date back to the last decade.
I do prefer the current point-of-view and not the historical perspective.

There are users that seem to endorse brands as if they were born in the womb of that company.

I have a lot of respect for Tools Made in the USA. The quality difference is there, however, some of the tools Made in Taiwan are as good as those Made in the USA and Germany.

I picked up the Knipex Cobras from Sears under their Craftsman line, both 7" and 10" both for under $40 with Lifetime Warranty.

I would normally agree. However, what most people in this thread probably don't realize is the OP has a history of being a troll on this site. If you go back and read most of the threads he has stated (and there are plenty of them) you will see a trend. He has been flat-out told to correct his behavior but it just continues, business as usual. Sure, he seems to take a break from posting for a few weeks at a time (probably posting under a different account during the off time) but returns after "the dust has settled" and continues right where he left off.

I find it ironic that a brand new registered user by the name of "5kwkdw3" who only had five posts (at the time when I typed this) was defending "winlinmac" (the OP) in this thread. Really, a brand new user is gonna tell-off the veteran users of this site? That takes balls. So, I did a little research.....

winlinmac hadn't been very active for a few weeks towards the end of October. He went from 10-15 through 11-1 with no posts. Then made four posts on 11-1. Nothing on 11-2, or 11-3, then started posting again at 6:20am on 11-4.

5kwkdw3, the new guy who is defending winlinmac.... his registration date is 11-4 and his first post was at 4:16am that same day.

Is it coincidence that the two users were on-line at roughly the same time frame? One, a brand new user, the other, a user who hadn't been very active for the past few weeks.... suddenly in the same thread together with the new guy defending the known troll? Yes, it's very possible that it's a complete coincidence. Do I believe both users are the same guy? ABSOLUTELY!!!

Mods, if you see this post, can you let Ryan know so he can run an IP search in the admincp? Then, instead of banning a bunch of his usernames, just ban his IP address(es).

Thanks.

Thanks, is there something weary about the ones sold by Sears Craftsman? I've heard they are also Made by Knipex, but is the reception by many, same?

yes Knipex alligators are good, in fact they are great.

yes they are MUCH better than comparable Channellock models in both quality and function.

I have the Sears cobras and the knipex alligators. Same quality, and they both work great.

Weary or leery or scary? Where did you hear that kind of info from?

I own both versions of the Cobra pliers: CM + Knipex....one of the best CM pliers available simply due to rebranding one of the best plier brands. Functionally identical and superficially different

I think the recent Craftsman threads here on the forums made me think twice before making another purchase at Sears. I could never tell if the ratchets or sockets I was ordering were from China or USA-made even though the reviewers all stated they received a Craftsman tool made in the USA.

I ordered a >200- Craftsman Mechanic's Tool set earlier this year on Sears website. Reviews all suggested that I'd be getting a set Made in the USA. When the brown box arrived, everything was bulk-packaged and had the Made in China label, I was dismayed. I returned the set to my local Sears store and the store associate couldn't make eye contact with me when I mentioned that I wasn't comfortable with the Made in China label.

I feel Stanley is the only company manufacturing in China with a satisfactory quality standard. Otherwise, most hand tools sourced from China in my opinion, are hit or miss. It's either USA, Germany, or Taiwan for me.

the rebraded craftsman are identical to the knipex except in color. however, the models i have seen in the store by me are re-branded Cobra's and not the Alligators. same quality, just a different design used to make adjustments. i picked the Alligators over the Cobras becuase the Alligators are slightly thinner due to the manual adjustment by the joint, and i needed them to fit into lineman pouch that does not afford much room.. either choice will make you happy..

Thanks, is there any reason why the 7"-Knipex is not aligned (the jaws are slightly off from one another) whereas my 10"-inch Knipex appears fine? Seems to be a little leeway here.

Now I'm wondering, isn't Wilde Tools the original maker of these type of pliers?

Just throwing this out there , but NWS is another company you can look into. They make stuff very comparable (even rumored to be better) than Knipex. If you decide to go cobra (if this is even still relevant at this point) NWS makes a similar design. Klein rebrands them under their own name too.. My next purchase will be from chadstoolbox.com , and I'm gonna pick up the standard 8" diagonals w/o the thick grips, (not the fantastico either), their combo lineman style pliers, and the 10" pump pliers. All standard grips.. This is basically the last popular brand I don't own, and I wanna give them their fair shot. I have some Irwin rebranded NWS stuff and it's amazing quality but the grips prevent me from carrying them in my pouch at work.

Thanks for staying on topic kctyphoon. I have a pair of 7" and 10" Cobras. If I'm not mistaken, Proto's Made in Germany Insulated Pliers are made by NWS. One user mentioned the jaw being a little brittle, probably bad batch? In spite of the cons, I'll have to still give them a try.

I have the 10" alligators I use at work. IMO they shouldn't even be compared to channellock, I have a few models of their pump pliers too. There is so much play and slop in the joints of channellock it's a wonder people don't complain about them more as much as people love to split hairs on this forum. It's basically a slip joint vs groove lock pliers. There is no slop in the alligators at all, and the heads are much thinner.. It's a definite display of superior engineering and design in a simple hand tool.

I have a pair of the 7" knipex craftsman ones and like them a lot. I wouldn't mind trying the Alligator ones tho either. I think they are cheaper.

I would say that this is a conundrum of epic proportions, I could tell you that I am aspiring to become a philanthropist, but then I would not be honest with myself. I would say that the information you attained could be seen as misinformation, yet it may have truth in a parallel universe.

I can see where you're coming from, but I'd probably say it's more of an enigma of legendary dimensions.

If you can make it to Eppy's in New Jersey, go try them first. I have Knipex Cobras, Raptors and Channellocks and each have their place in my toolbox and projects.

The quickest way you can lose your account on TGJ is mess up a thread in a worthwhile forum like this one with drama... or responding to drama... Seriously fellas, try to be polite to one another or please find another forum to frequent. That goes for everyone in this thread... Just silly...
