How big a motor for this Speedaire compressor pump?

At a shop where we work on our hot rods there are 2 compressors, a large horizontal with a Kellogg 331TV pump, 5 hp, and a rather sad old vertical that I never paid much attention to. The 5 HP motor on the horizontal appears to have burnt out. Been using the vertical, but it really doesn't put out much air. For some reason I got the idea to look at the vertical setup to see if by chance it might be a 5 HP also, and was pleasantly surprised to see it is. But, the weird thing is it's driving this little dinky Speedaire single stage pump like would come on a portable compressor, model # 2Z630C. I want to swap the motor to the horizontal and put another motor on the vertical to keep it as backup. It certainly doesn't need 5HP. Been searching online to try to find the specs and recommended motor, with no luck. I did find an old auction for the same compressor, and it is a little portable, pic from the auction below. Auction had no info on the motor, of course. Do you think I could get away with a 1 or 1-1/2 HP motor? Anybody have a source for specs.
TIA, Jim

Yes - a 1 to 2 HP motor will work for that pump, depending upon the pump speed. If you have access to a clamp-on AC ammeter, you can check the motor running current at the shutoff pressure to see where you are in relation to the full-load amp rating (FLA on the nameplate) of the motor. Hopefully at or below - you can be a bit above and get away with it IF it is intermittent use. If you are more than 10% above, I'd look for a smaller motor pulley.

If you can't find a manual on Grainger's website, give customer service a call. I did this with my compressor and they emailed me a copy of the manual (once they finally found it).

The manual will list the model number of the motor used in the parts list. You can then search for the specs to find out the HP. I suspect the original motor was 2hp.

Thanks guys. Hoping I might not need to swap motors, found a broken feed wire on the horizontal today, some clown wired it with solid wire from the mag starter to the motor. Picked up some THHN at HD, try that in the next day or 2. Jake I saw you're looking for a 2 HP motor in another thread. What RPM? Might have one if I don't need it for this compressor.

Mine is a 20 gallon dual cylinder and takes a 2 h.p. if I recall correctly.

I'm hoping to find a Dayton 6k773, or the Leeson equivalent. There are two on eBay, but the price is a little steep for my taste (but in the reasonable retail range) and I have to wait for a check from an insurance company before I can do anything. I may end up sucking it up once the check clears.

I got the compressor at an estate sale 1-1/2yrs ago really cheap, but just now wired a 220v line for it. Flipped the switch and ****. Now I know why it was priced to sell. My electrician checked my wiring, every thing was done right, so the motor must have been bad when I bought it. :dunno:
