I'm not sure what the excitement is about. My stuff looks like that. A week of fast food and beverage containers will fill the passenger footwell level with the seat. Back seat and trunk fills quickly with spare clothes or the dirty clothes I replaced with the spare clothes. Add that to the usual tools and misc junk and it's looking not unlike your example.

I'm sorry, I'll stick my arms up to the elbow in a greasy motor, but I'm not going to deal with trash like that. I've found that more often than not, people who treat their cars like that, are a pita to deal with in general. Nothing to do with big boy pants, life is too short to have to deal with that ****. I'd fire her as a customer.

Annotate the time spent cleaning debris out of the way and charge accordingly. It she wants to pay hourly rate for you to pluck trash so be it.

I pulled into a spot next to a brand spanking new Challenger. The goddamned thing was so heaped with trash inside it was ridiculous. It was completely FILLED with McDonalds garbage and drink bottles from the back to the front, and there was just a little "coccoon" where the dude sat to drive. I couldn't believe it.

Reminds me of the post on here a while back about a guy trying to diagnose an hvac issue in a fleet vehicle. Same person drove it and always put something on the passenger side floor.. Can't remember the specifics.

But ya, **** it up.. thats nothing. My favorite though was a couple that brought us a car, no rush. It was there about a week and a half in the middle of summer. It smelled in there. finally I investigated and found 2 bushels of rotten apples in the back. They came in for something and told us, oh ya there's some really good apples in the back feel free to help yourself to them. YUCK no thanks.

I have done the same - put on gloves and put the trash back when done in some cases.
Seen the hairy Evaps before, too...you have the right idea. Put the gloves on and clean yourself up when done.

Some of you must really have it well, being able to dismiss jobs at will, because the vehicle is used as a rolling trash can. Some of the people driving those cars don't really realize the condition they are in, some are just lazy slobs, but...

You know what? They are still paying customers. You cannot control anyone's cleanliness, unless it's under your own roof. **** it up, put on your big boy pants and do the job. Yeah, it's disgusting, and I once felt the way many of you do - especially when asked to do a heater core on van that had cow sh!t INSIDE of it, on the dash, carpet, everything. I didn't take that job, but you know? Someone did, and made quite a bit of money on that job, and probably gained a long term customer. I later found out the people that owned that van were busy farmers, running a VERY successful business, this was one of the vehicles for the "hired hands" to run in the fields with. Their own, private vehicles were well kept and none too cheap, nor did they flinch at spending "whatever it took" to keep their vehicles going. Be careful who you decide to alienate, because (sometimes) you just never know who you're really dealing with; and there may be a time when the shop isn't generating the kind of money it used to. That's when you'll learn to appreciate a customer for being a customer.

I could care less about that. You can clean you're own damn car out before bringing in for service. It's not my responsibility unless you want to pay $97 an hour to have your car cleaned.

I would have refused to work on that van until their "hired hands" came there and cleaned the **** out.

First time customer, the sister of a 20 year customer dropped this off and I am speechless. Had I looked inside I would of told them what to do with it. It's here because the blower motor doesn't work and it just happens to be under the glove box. The fuse box is under the back seat and it's also buried in sh*t.
I'm lost as to what to say and not piss off the regular customer. It's so bad I don't want to bring it inside for fear of what may crawl out. pig pen.jpg

Two words: Hazmat Suit

In all seriousness that is pretty gross. Do you have a few towels you can throw down once you excavate the big stuff? Its already not easy to get to the blower motor as it is...

I deal with that kind of mess more than I like to but almost never turn down work. The only job I have ever turned down was a lady's van with about ten cats in it that needed a blower motor, cat hair everywhere and the carpet ''moved'' from the fleas. Just roll a can over to it and hope you don't find maggots when you hit the carpet.

Back in the early seventies, I worked for VW dealers. In all those years, I only came across one car that was full of ****. I would like to think that VW owners were a clean lot, however, the frequency of trashy cars these days is probably just another sign of the coming apocalypse!
We used to find all kinds of interesting things in cars. Handguns under the drivers seat were not uncommon. If you found one, you were obligated to show it to all the other mechanics. Of course, we wiped it off real well before returning it to the car. Finding bags of pot or pills in the glove box was also pretty common. Some mechanics would take the drugs, figuring that the customer couldn't complain about it to the management. One time a coworker found several ties in the trunk. He spent all day wearing the ties while working on cars. He would have a new tie every time he came up to the parts counter.

My brother dated a girl who's car was that nasty, damn thing had roaches in it. Also had customer that smoked like a forrest fire, well I think she actually just smoldered. Had those gawdawful long hair black seat covers, well actually they were nicotene yellow as was all the windows in the car. The ahstray was full so she just let it overflow onto the shifter tunnel and floor, its amazing that ash pile stayed. That was the only car I never test drove and before I would pull it in to the shop I would take a can of lysol poke a hole in it and slam the doors just to mask the smell for an hour or so.

Guy drove an old beater dodge to a farm he worked at. Got a calf in the spring from the farmer, took it home in the dodge. When it died, he put it back in the dodge to dispose of it? When I put the car on the rollback 2 years later, the mcdonalds garbage covered the dead calf! Normally we would search cars for treasure (tools, money, equipment) but in this case, we dropped the gas tank, popped the radiator and battery then set the car in the crusher!

Danscobra6,
thats a sweet little ride you have there.......fuk em if they call it a fake. I would rather have yours than an original, would feel bad laying into the original and constantly be worried something would happen to it and then never really enjoy it. Your looks like you built it and that is all kinds of fun! I would lose my licence and go broke on buying tires if it were mine

Exactly! Beautiful car, I'd drive the heck out of it, real or fake, even if the distributor is on the wrong end of the motor ;)

Here's a different take on it...spend 15 minutes doing a quick clean (gloves, etc. as necessary), fix the mechanicals, return to 20 year customer and get kudos for such great service.

I've seen and taken rides from coworkers with cars like that, usually their homes and workspaces are kept to the same high standard.

One coworker bought a new used truck,he gave me a ride in it a few weeks later,
I said "you have a shoe over here" on my floor board.
He said, "that's the guy I bought it from shoe"

I guess it was an included bonus and he thought he'd just keep in on the floor board with the other trash.

I'm built differently.

Thanks for the compliments. It took 10 years to build this car but worth every minute. Except for the value it is so much nicer then the originals. More HP, better brakes, 5 spd, better ride and handling. So many other improvements.
As far as the distributor comment, that could start a multi page debate LOL. I'm not a big Ford guy but the chassis would of rejected a Chevy.

Back to my OP with the **** filled car. I shoveled the front and back seats out and put the garbage in the trunk where it will stay.
It was blowing 30 amp blower fuses under the back seat. Easy fix, the blower processor(resistor) by the motor was shorted inside. Also not many lights worked, it took 8 bulbs.

I didn't look at this job as needing to man up and get after it like some said. It was more about how in peoples minds is it OK to leave something like this to be worked on.
If I was invited to their home I would kindly refuse the invitation.

I would assume you took a pic of the worst case scenario, and if that's the height of the filth then that's not really that bad. I know a lot of good people that have similar interiors. The difference would be they'd probably have the pride and decency to clean it up and make it presentable before bringing it in.

Here's the Dodge Ram I posted about yesterday. I guess it's a good thing the guy didn't buy a crew cab?

More than Once I've had to call the customer up and tell them they need to clean up their vehicle before we could work on it, but the worst was the manager from a nation wide tire store that we did alignments for. It was a touchy situation because we worked with 4 of their stores and this guy gave us alot of business. The car was his wife's and it was so bad, when the tech opened the door he started to gag, nevermind trying to sit it. There was trash and food containers and dirty clothes, bra's and *****'s and more food containers....and maggotts....and cockroaches. It was probably the most disgusting thing I've seen in a long time and I have to hand it to the tech, he tried several times, but when he puked I said that was enough. I called the customer and very politely told him to come get his hoopty and clean it up first, We're mechanics, not janitors, what would he do if that car belonged to one of his customers? You would think the guy would be embarassed, but no, I can only imagine what his house was like. Needless to say the car never came back, however we did continue to do business with him.

I really should give my customer a little more credit. She covered up the garbage with the seat cover and ran the seat all the way forward like a trash compactor. Very thoughtful don't ya think?
The real mess was under the back seat. Enough **** under there to keep a family of rodents busy for a very long time.
A lot of good but also some very gross replies on this thread.

I would have to think that driving around in a garbage can like that would really start to affect my self confidence.........How do you explain that mess to a prospective date? How long does it take to throw a little of that out at a time while you are pumping gas?

One of the really good aspects of owning an independent repair shop (I don't now, but did) is that you can turn people away.
That car is an easy call for me. If someone brought in a nasty car like that, I simply told them they can bring it back to me... after they clean it up. Otherwise, I just won't work on it.

Disgusting wife the dude has. Ick.

People are nasty. My friend has a couple rental properties. A piece of garbage woman with bad credit and bad rental history begged him to rent her a nice 2 bedroom Cape Cod house (new roof, fresh paint, new hardwoood floors). He let her move in. She didn't even pay the full $500 deposit. Was going to make payments on it. lol. She never paid another month's rent. And it took a couple of months to get her out. Her boyfriend put holes in the walls, and they never bothered taking out the garbage. Even though the large can is just right outside the kitchen door.

People are nasty! Ive refused to work on cars that had trash piled all over them. The dog cars are the worst..how can you not tell it REEKS of dog?

One place I worked for it was a no brainer, throw on a dirty jumpsuit and several layers of gloves and a mask if you wanted and clean it. All to the tune of $125/hr billed to the customer. Course a phone call was placed first to the customer, most came and cleaned them up themselves or left to never return. But those special idiots..

Similar thing happened to my family. We also own a lot kf apartments. One of them in Montebello we had a tenent who was approved by the gm( a stupid one) who paid the sown paymen . Lied on almost every aspect of the application. Paid only 1/8 months she was there. Took advantage of a death in the family to cause more ****. And to evict her would've taken another 6 months probably and a good amount of money. We told her to pay 1/5 and leave. She did and we got rid of her. We had to refurbished the entire apartment.

This is maybe slightly worse than average. I've seen way worse. The top two would be a Mazda 2 that we cleaned outside before we would even bring it in the shop. Even after we cleaned it it smelled terrible. Put the floormats back in about 2 or 3 days later and I gagged.

By far the worst I ever saw though was a Civic that came in when I was working as a tech at the local Honda dealer. I put a seat cover on for my benefit. If I remember correctly was doing an oil changed. After I was done our detailer started doing an interior clean. He stopped when he started finding needles everywhere.

My buddy installs appliances for a living, so he sees all kinds of stuff! He usually gets 1 or 2 hoarders a month. He will go in the house and evaluate whether he safely do the job. If he can't stomach it, he delivers the appliance and collects a delivery fee and tells them to call him back when it's cleaned up. He typically draws the line when he opens up a cabinet and it's full of roaches. We often discuss how these people have no shame letting a stranger come into their filth. A lot of them will even argue with him when he refuses the install. Luckily, the company he contracts with is good about standing behind their installers.
