Hi guys.

Putting some tapcon fasteners in brick and cinderblock. I’m wondering what distance the fasteners need to be from each other. I’ve read 10 anchor diameters apart, I’ve also read 10” apart.

Any input greatly appreciated as always.

Cheers.

never saw specs for tapcons but a lot of bolt applications state 7 diameters. Simpson hardware made for tapcons have them within 1-1/2" of each other. Hope this helps a little

I wouldn't use a tapcon on cinder block. I don't even care for them on brick. It would help to know what you're anchoring for best practices with the mounting.

Really? I have hung quite a bit of stuff (some quite heavy) on the hollow cinder block walls at work with tapcons. Love them. I haven't put them very close together though, most items I have hung were larger and I spaced the mounting holes several inches apart. Closest I placed them is approximately 3" apart on a curtain rod for a splash curtain around our Hydro table.

Thanks you gentlemen. As always, much appreciated.

One more question, once I’ve installed the tapcon scan I take them out and put them back in or are the holes only good once?

Thanks so much.

Please also note they can only penetrate 1 1/2" into the concrete substrate. Any deeper and risk of breakage is very high. I would not attempt to remove and reinstall based on my experiences.

I hate Tapcons - they strip out too easily. I guess they are okay for mounting small things like electrical boxes and conduit but I'm wary of using them for load-bearing applications.

We've used them for structural applications. They are fine for light loads. They also make a medium-duty anchor https://www.tapcon.com/products/heavy-duty-tapcon-plus

I also used to dislike because they snapped on me, but no different than other manufacturers. What I discovered is that the holes have to be drilled deeper by AT LEAST 1/4" and hole cleaned with compressed air. I've successfully installed and reinstalled the 1/4x 2 3/4. An impact helps too.
