I've got a 60 gallon vertical in my basement. It's mounted on rubber pads so it's not really loud although you do hear it in my kitchen. I put it in the basement because it's 10 feet from the fuse panel and I like the idea of having air in my basement workshop too.

Most people in cold climates who have it outside build a shed around it. I have mine inside because its less work to install and easy to service. Plus it looks cool having equipment in the garage.

Guilty as charged.

I have had my 60 gallon upright outside for 15 years now in a wooden box so to speak. I have only changed the oil and drained the tank. In the winter I don't drain it as often because usually can't get to it under all the snow. Also the water usually freezes at the drain. When I do drain it I don't see any more rusty water than usual. I try not to over think things and I don't like living in an area where I have to worry about theft. Also I have all the switches and ball valves mounted in my shop if something should sound funny during use.

My 80 gal Quincy has been outside in it's own insulated shed for 10 years. Still chugging away.....
It gets fairly cold here, so I run a lighter grade oil in it, have heat tape/ insulation on the outlet and can turn on a space heater if it gets below zero.

No way I'm going to listen to that racket all day long in the shop.....

But that isn't really outside. It's inside, but in another building. :)

I've seen way too many air compressors being treated like a rented mule, with little or no care or maintenance. I enjoy the look of my new 80 gal. two stage 7.5 hp 175 psi pretty red shiney, cast iron pump, 23.5 SCFM, Porter Cable 240 volt Air Compressor.
I placed mine inside the shop to keep it out of the outdoor environment, rather than inside a closed in box where it cannot breathe or cool properly. I even installed a run time meter for timely oil changes and a timer to monitor run duty cycles. Needless to say, I am fond of my A/C.

This is in interesting topic as I just installed my new Rolair 60 gal compressor. I am curious about Cybear's runtime meter and the timer for run time cycles. I would appreciate some info on them. My compressor is in the garage but may get moved to the attached shed in the spring. Ed.

Mine will be inside.. but in a separate sound insulated room.. I will be plumbing the air intake from outdoors and using a cheap car muffler to reduce the noise.

Built a closet around mine with a 45 degree wall and 36" door in the corner of my shop.. Really cuts the noise down and it gets adequate ventilation through the gap beneath the door (~1").

As a bonus, I actually gained useable storage space by making the cluttered corner more organized.

Since I have 12' ceilings I was able to put a second story on the closet for rarely used items.

Because it would cost me a small fortune to replace my Kaeser SM10 Aircenter due to theft, misuse, or abuse.

Mine is inside because:

a) I have a shop in a commercial location with NO outside storage permitted/ even if it was permitted, no where to put it in my set up

b) It was 39* INSIDE my shop this morning (no heat)

If it was say arizona or so cal or somewhere where 65 is chilly, sure, I'd build a small shed and put it outside. That is however, IMO, a luxuary reserved for the south west.

I built a 96 square foot shed next to my garage...partially insulated for noise control; it's where the compressor lives, along with various pieces of lawn and garden equipment. I have a motor contactor to install for a remote power switch.

I had it inside; the noise drove me crazy - and drowned out the music.

I would put it outside of my garage if I have a chance because of the noise (disc valve pump or not). I believe if you have a shed for the compressor, that's equivalent of it being in the garage (most garages are not insulated and heat/cool).

Seem to remember hearing/reading that using the breaker as a switch was pretty hard on the breaker. Not sure they are designed for that. Mine has a switch on the unit where the wire comes in for an on/off switch. Keith

I think that you are right on that.

I have mine in a storage room with the wifes storage room between it and the shop. It is inside out of the dust we ge from the fields west of us. I also have an upduct above it so in the summer when the cooler is on the warm air is going into the attic.
