First of all, let's just get this out of the way up front: I'm a chump.
Now for the details on what type of chump. A tool chump. I buy used, worn-out tools, thinking there's still life in them. To wit: I was working remotely on a house restoration when I needed to mow the lawn, el pronto. Went to the local Mexi-meet and shopped the used lawnmowers, of which there were dozens. One Señor had a Craftsman Quattro for $40. If I could get two lawn mows out of it, I'd have my money back, I thought. So I asked if he'd start it up for me.
"Si," he says, pulls the cord, and the mower jumps to life. Waited a half hour, went back, asked if he'd start it again. "Si," and it starts up and purrs nicely for several minutes. Deal, thank you Señor, I take it to the house, remove the oil and gas, replacing it with fresh, and proceed to mow the lawn without a hitch.
Three weeks later, I can't get the thing to stay running. I get maybe a minute of mow out of it then it dies.
Four weeks later (now), I can't even get it to start. So I did not get my two mows out of it. Refer to "chump" designation above. But as my Dad told me, "When you lose, don't lose the lesson." So here's my question:
What did the Señor do, to get that mower to start so easily 4 weeks ago? What magic elixir did he pour into it to make it look like it was a reliable starter? Is there some trick to it? Or am I just a perpetually duped Gringo? This is the second time I've bought a small-engine powered item (other was a chipper) that refused to start within a week or two after I got it home, but started just fine for the seller.
