The local pawn shop has an it 2135timax for sale that I'm going to go look at. How do I check it to make sure it isn't worn out? They want 140 for it. Is this a good deal? How availblee are parts for this gun and are they reasonable cost ? Any input is appreciated.

Best visual inspection would be the inlet valve in the handle it will pop off very easily just push in pins with flat head screwdrivers on bottom of the handle and make sure no rust is present

Congrats on the new gun, I assume. I have the Matco version and couldn't be happier with it. You can get a boot for it if you want to keep it looking purty.
Thanks but I didn't buy it. He wanted 140 cash out the door and wouldn't budge. I only had 120. I'm really thinking I need to go back in there tomorrow and buy it. It looks like its in about 95% condition or better. Its super clean and had recently been oiled. He wouldn't let me in the back to run it but he said he would guarantee it worked. I don't see how a tool in that new of condition would be broken. What do ya'll think? Don't really need it right now but I want it right now.

I've bought and sold 2 of them (well, only bought the 2nd, still got it) for $100 or less. First was the older style one, bought used from the SO man, which was the only reason I paid $100 for the old style. I sold it pretty cheap and upgraded to the new style a guy was selling for IIRC $80.
I mean, $140 isn't awful, but if you're doubting it and/or can't verify, I would pass... hell, I had the 2235 preordered from Amazon for right around $200, although I had to cancel it.

OP, if it looks in really good shape it probably is, 140 is not TOO bad for a great shape 2135. What gun do you have now? The 2135 is a BEAST.....love mine so much I got the 2235!

Even if it seems to work with air hooked to it, It could give you a maximum torque of a lot less than a new one. 140 plus 40 for a new kit is not a great deal. If the pawn shop were buying it from you, you couldn't beg and get 100.

I've been looking on eBay and most of the newer used ones are around 20 dollars or so less and this one is cleaner. I won't be able to go back until Sunday. I doubt it will be sold in that time. If it is, I'll keep coaming eBay. I bought the rebadged husky last week. It stopped working so I took it back (if anyone had seen my other post and was curious).

It was a month or so before they shipped, on preorder. Unfortunately something came up and money was tight when it was going to ship, and I already had a perfectly good gun, so I cancelled it.
I haven't seen it that low since either... but the point was more that the 2135 is no longer "the bestest", so I'd think used prices would be dropping, not... well, at least staying about level... $150ish was about what I was seeing when I was shopping for used ones 3+ years ago.
I mean, not a bad price if it's in great shape, but the doubt might drive me off if I were in his shoes.

If the guy will not let you back inside his work room have him hook up the air line and hit the trigger at least you can hear it from a distance. The price is not bad go back and tell him you need to hear if it works before you lay out the cash.
I buy a few from one guy, but he is honest enough that he tells me when the tool is not working because he is selling from a large tent without any air supply on hand.

He did tell me it worked and said he'd check it again. I heard it run in the back. It didn't skip a beat. Sounded just like a new impact to me. I was a little put off that he didn't have me go back with him but I understand. That's inviting people to burglarize the business. Still, its like buying a used car without a test drive. My thought is the gun is pretty prestine. Maybe it commands a slight premium. My second choice now would be to order a new 231c to the door for the same as I can buy this one for. Is the 2135timax a better gun? Maybe. But at least i'd know the 231c is brand new and working at full capacity. Maybe the 231c is the better way to go. It will handle lugs and suspension work all day long on a one ton truck right?

Premium pneumatic tools are one of those things you should never buy used, IMO. It has been my experience that most mechanics dont clean or lube their tools until after they start running like ****. Just too much of a gamble, and the warranty on the tools are like what--only a year for impacts? I'd pass unless it's at a crack head price. Just me though.

IMHO it boils down to what kind of pneumatic tool...impacts being down at the bottom of the list of ones to buy without testing.
Once I was shootin the you know what with my FIL in his shop...he handed me over an impact he got, gave it to me..we hooked it up to his air, spun fine and looked great.
I get it home and the next time I do a tire rotation, whip out my impact...spins & sounds great but could not remove a single lug off a 97 Honda Accord
he said he thought it worked fine and to just garbage it....so luckily I didn't pay anything for it, but after that experience, there is no way I would ever spend more then 20.00 for any used impact without playing with it on actual fasteners first.KTA_Kevin

less than $120 brand new! The reason for the closeout is left over stock with the world cup soccer ball.
Most shops here say they tested them. Don't know if they really did or not, but when I buy them, no problems yet. Any questions of the wear, take it apart and have a look. Critical parts I've found are the motor end plate wear and anvil and hammer wear, where they contact. Those tend to be the power robbers. Look at the cylinder bore surface too, I've seen them worn so bad, they look like you took a grinder to them for a few minutes, and the vanes are mushroomed where they contact the cylinder.

I've bought and got burned by too many used air tools that I don't even bother any more. New is the only way to go. I bought my 2135 maybe 5 years ago at sears for less then 200. I don't know why they went up so much in price now. But, I use it every day and so do a lot of techs, it has paid for itself.

Well guys, I ended up buying a new open box ir231c on eBay for 75 bucks. From what I've gathered here and elsewhere on the interwebz, it is not the most powerful but is very reliable. If pro's still use this model to earn money with then I can't see how I can go wrong in my home shop. You guys gave some greeat suggestions but getting a new ir for 75 bucks seems like a no brainer. Too bad it didn't come with a free soccor ball.

Excellent choice for the money. I'd pick the Husky H4480 for the price if I was wanting a composite with some punch, for cheap. It's at 109 bucks,I think.
Yes, I had bought one discounted at HD on your recommendation but it locked up on me so I just took it back. I think I should be happy with this IR but if not, I'm sure I can easily sell it for what I paid for it.
