I am new to this site. I have my fathers Snap-on tool box and snap-on tools that need to be sold. What is the best way to evaluate the box and tools? Are there web-sites that would help with this process? These tools are likely from the 50's to maybe 70's. At this time I am only looking for advice on the evaluation nothing else.

I'd start with E bay & use their "Completed Listings" function. See if you can find the same tool & what it sold for....

The two answers above are good, you may also find a local S/O dealer and inquire.

As I do this for a living, I will give you a hand.
There are 2 ways to go about it. I would recommend going both ways.
The first thing you do is call snap-on and find out who your local rep is and make a call to him and ask him to come evaluate your tools. Most dealers are stand up guys and will not charge you to do this, but will have to be on their down time, ie after last stop, or a sat or sun.
He will give you a higher value of the tools than you can sell them for. You will know this once he gives you the value and you ask him to cut you the check. Actually they do sell used tools, but usually not whole collections, and most will not deal with older tools.

The second way, is a long and exhausting way, but will get you the most money for your tools. If you can id the set write down the # and go to snap on dot com and you can see what it is new. If you can not id a set, take 1 item out either socket, or wrench, find the stock # IE oex, soex, oexm etc..etc... and put that # in search box on snap on dot com. When it comes up a price will be shown and below that will show in what sets does it come in. You can then see which set you have, and click on that set and see what the new cost is.

Having a complete list of all sets, and the other loose tools will get you the most money for the tools. If you have a yard sale and do not have your list, you will probably not make much and find that the tools are gone. Meaning you will sell the tools, but not for maximum potential.

You make the most money like so,
Sell it in sets, complete as possible on eBay.
You make the least amount selling it all at once. I know this because this is how I often buy tools. I buy estates out, and I buy whole box sets. I then piece it out.

A good rule is if the tools are not all beat to chit, and are in decent eye candy condition, you should get 50-60% of new, while selling on eBay can get you up to 80% of new depending on what it is. Completed listings search is okay, but do not count on fetching that exact price, nor do you cut yourself short either, as sometimes you will get more than that price. It is all based on who needs what and at what time they need it. Good luck and if you need any more help just ask.

You've sparked my curiousity....
Never heard of this....I've looked and don't see it....
Where do I find it?

Okay the ez version. Get on eBay. up in search type anything you want to search for. Once they come up, at the top of page over to the right see advanced button. Click that, it takes you to another page. Scroll down about 2 paragraphs size, you will see a box on the left middle says completed listings. Check that box, go back to top of page hit the search tab.

Whaaaaalllllllaaaaa! You now see that items completed listings green sold red did not sell. Thank yuh thank yuh very much!! I am here Sun- Fridays 10-6 :lol_hitti

Thanks for the input and advice so far. I will create an inventory first and then start the research using ebay and other resources such as the snap-on website. If I get stuck on any specific pieces or sets, I'll ask here.

Of course you can sell it to me for "a buck two ninety five" and I'll give you 10% of what I sell them for.....

Just kidding of course... Sorry to hear about your dad, I know how that *****..

If you want to save a bunch of work you could list the sets on fleabay with an opening bid of the price of a similiar new set of midbrand tools. Very few Snappy tools go cheap on ebay and I am sure you will get your money for them. I am looking for a larger box and metric impact swivel sockets in 1/2' drive.

Just be sure to list as sets or individual pieces if larger.

Another approach is to scan the classified section here on the GJ and see if you can find simililar tools or sets, then see what each member is asking for their tools. Another thought is that you can save yourself a few dollars selling it on the GJ instead of paying pay-pal fees.

I take it tools from that long ago will be well used and not in mint state so you must price accordingly.

Hope that helps you out.

woody;)
