How Do I Extend my "Logged In" Time on GJ?

I'm still pretty new here, and I love the forum, but am not happy with the way that GJ automatically logs me out if i leave to get a beer or take a phone call.

In fact, there are times, quite a few, when I was actively typing a post, and it took longer than the forum thought it should, so I was logged out while I was typing ( unbeknownst to me ) and when i tried to submit i lost my post and had to retype it. ( NOW when i finish typing, I do a ( Ctrl A ), select all, then ( CTRL C ) copy, and try to submit it. That way, if I'm logged out, I can log back in and paste my text in a new post. )

So, does anyone know how to extend the time that I am online, before the forum software automatically logs me off? If wouldn't so bad if it gave me a warning, but nothing.

I am sure there is a good reason for it, but would would like a little more time to work, before I am bid a not-so-fond goodbye.

Did you check the remember me box next to your login info?

There's a check box next to your login that says "keep me logged in" or "remember me" or something like that. If that doesn't work, its probably a browser setting. Chrome and Firefox and chrome on my cell keep me logged in for months at a time unless I delete my cookies.

You may not be allowing the needed cookies to be saved on your computer.

I've been logged in for a month on this computer and longer than that on three other computers and my iPad.

You may have a point. I only log in automatically on my personal devices. Now that you mention it, it only seems to happen on work computers. Either way, once I'm logged in, shouldn't I stay logged in? If I'm writing a post and stop for any length of time, whenI go to post it, I have to log in again.

Whomever said it is different from forum to forum is correct. I am a member of a couple of different forums, and they all let me stay logged in for longer. I don't know HOW much longer, but I can go from one to another, browse that one for a while, then go back to the first and still be logged in.

On the GJ, if I spend too much time typing, or proofreading, I am logged out even while I'm STILL ON the forum. It isn't earthshaking, but pretty annoying. Especially when I know it doesn't HAVE to be that way.

Your IT department may be restricting cookies if you haven't restricted them yourself.

I'm on either my home ( personal ) computer or my home office computer. I AM the IT department and I am not restricting myself.

I just remembered, that when I am on the road, my laptop does the same thing.

I've been doing ctrl x, then ctrl v for decades. Because ctrl c doesn't always save, X-V assures you have in your clipboard what you want.

If your using Fire Fox, there is a plugin called Session Keeper. It basically keeps pinging the site on a set interval. There are others too. Need to be careful though ... some sites will ban your IP if they think your trying a hack or something.

I work for a state agency and we have some colleges that do that ... we block the IP and show an error page for them to call me. I then tell them to stop it, or we will continue to block them ... they get it after being blocked for a few days.

ctrl c is copy. ctrl x is cut. Both will reliably copy the text to your clipboard. But ctrl c leaves the text on the screen while ctlr x removes it.

I promise you that ctrl does always save just like ctrl x. I use both countless times a day while writing code.

You should ask in the Questions & Suggestions section of the forum. I bet Ryan or someone will see your question there.

I'll bet you $10 it's going to be cookie related though. Assuming you are checking "remember me".

Where I work they have IE setup to remove cookies and history automatically. Which means it behaves as you describe, or pretty close, with any discussion forums. So I just use Chrome for that kind of thing when I'm on my work computer. I can go for days on that computer without checking GJ and I'm still logged in when I go back. Using Chrome.

i think if you're inactive on a page for 10 or so minutes it resets your "last visited" time. it does that for me where i don't get logged out but it will reset all those "go to first new post" buttons which i find irritating. i like having those so it shows me all the new stuff and it opens the thread to where ever i left off last time i was here which is nice for crazy long threads or threads with a lot of reading and pics to stare at and such. afaik theres no way to change that.

ALL: i'm dealing with a 4 year old Dell laptop that came with Windows 7 that crashes ever few minutes or sometimes it stays on for hours at a time because of Windows 10 i downloaded. i still never get logged off GJ, but i do check the box that says keep me logged on.

when i delete cookies and temp files to clean up my browser (i use Chrome moslty now and used Explorer for many years) then i need to log back on and i'm on anytime i click on GJ no matter how many times my laptop crashes.

I'm thinking of getting a Mac laptop. anybody use Mac computer for GJ? good, bad or same as Windows?

Are you checking the "remember me" box ? That is the first step to trouble shoot your problem.

No, it's something with GJ. I am on other sites and don't have the problem.

Tommy

If you're not clicking that box, you will get timed out on GJ. If you click it and it's still logging you out after a time period, then check your settings be sure you've allowed cookies to be saved or any other security measures.

However, if you don't click "remember me" and don't do it on any other forums yet they stay logged in. I'd venture to say Ryan has something set somewhere to auto log off after you are inactive for a certain time period. The other forums you mention may not have their forum set up that way.

EDIT: I'd also like to add, while it might be a PITA to get timed out, I can see it being set up as a security measure for both the user and Admin.

Think about it this way, you're logged in at work (or another public computer) but don't click "remember me". It's only going to log you out when you close the browser or leave the site. Something happens and the page doesn't close out or you have to leave your desk for some reason, effectively leaving you logged in while you're away. Somebody else comes along and sees that you are logged and trys to play a practical joke on you. They make several posts saying "bad stuff". What happens then ? Admin has to clean up the mess and you get an infraction or a ban.

It has to be on your end. If you automatically delete cookies at the end of your browser session, then you will have to log in next time. If you are logging in off of a smartphone, then you have to log in every time. If you are on your home computer, and you have checked the "Remember Me" box, then your computer settings need to be changed. Also if your computer auto updates, you most likely have to log in again. I'd venture to say that you are either on a phone, a shop computer, or if on a home computer, you need to change your settings. BUT.....for security reasons, it may be better to log in every time, IDK. I do know that it doesn't take just a few seconds to log in.

If you are on your home computer, go to TOOLS, INTERNET OPTIONS, GENERAL, and see if the option "Delete browser history on exit" is checked or not. If it is checked in the box, uncheck it.

Just had another thought on this. If you're running one of the anti virus packages that claims to protect you while browsing the internet, that might be causing your problem. You could try disabling it altogether long enough to test or just turn off the browser protection feature.

I really don't remember when I signed on but it's been over a year iirc. That said I did have to log-in on 1/1/16 for some odd reason, and when I did I forgot to check remember me and got timed out and had to log in a second time, That's when I remembered to check remember me and now all is well

1. Clear the cache and temporary internet files from your browsers memory.

2. Next time you login, click the "remember me" box.

After that, you will be good to go!

Thanks,

You're missing his point. ;)

ctrl-c *should* copy the text, and *should* be reasonably reliable, but it isn't perfect. The point is that there is no verification of the ctrl-c operation, so if anything goes wrong (missed the key, had the wrong thing selected, window focus changed while you were typing, another program copied to the clipboard, etc, etc), you won't find out until AFTER the post failure... and AFTER the original text you spent so much time writing has been lost. :(

Using ctrl-x and ctrl-v is a simple step to validate without a doubt that the clipboard transfer happened AND that the text it transferred is the full and correct text that you intended to copy. A blind ctrl-c operation won't do this.
