How do I hook up this old motor

This is an old Craftsman 1/2 hp split phase motor.

Am I missing some wires. Can I change rotation.

Which wire is hot. And does it have to be grounded to make it run. Thanks.

No, it doesn't have to be grounded to make it run, BUT it should (must)be grounded for safety purposes.

L1 to terminal #1, N to terminal #3. There's no Ground terminal so you probably want to figure out a way to ground the chassis. Not reversible.

Split phase = 120v.

Ground isnt for running the motor. Its for safety- to eneable the breaker to clear fault current...

Find a screw, loosen it, scrape some paint off and put your ground wire under the screw looped around it.

Looks burnt to me. Are those centrifugal switch contacts near the back bearing stuck closed? Those might be the start windings that got cooked because the centrifugal switch contacts are fused together.

No. The contacts are not stuck.

Well the guy said he would give me my money back. Just hope he's a man of his word. Seemed like he was a nice guy.

You can always toss it aside and hope scrap prices come up again. At one point years back, the yard I go to was paying 25c per pound for electric motors.

I currently have one outside with a rope through it thats being used to hold down a tarp!

Oh, save those 4 long bolts that hold the motor together. They'll come in very handy if you're fixing up an old motor and snap off a rusty bolt.
