If you have XP, download "Image Resizer" from here: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx

It adds the option to resize your pics from your right click menu. You can do one or 1000 at a time. Choices include 640x480, 800x600, 1024x768 and 240x320. For the width of this forum layout, 640x480 (or smaller) is the least obtrusive to skewing the layout.

No muss, no fuss and really quick.

LOL -- yea . . . I think my tutorial was the "if you want to do it yourself and build it" kind of thing . . . the PowerToys thing is pretty slick. I need to install that for a few people that have problems.

I used to do my pics in a similar way to what you detailed, but when I found the powertoy, I started using it myself and never looked back. When it reduces the image PX size, it also reduces the dpi in one shot. Makes mass processing easy.
