just picked up 12 of the attached lighting fixtures for stupid cheap. 4 bulbs, 48" long, T8. they are the type to be recessed into a ceiling, but i don't have a ceiling in my current shop, just 2X4 rafters. there are a handful of holes going down the center of the housing, would it be as simple as screwing the housings length wise onto the rafters?

seems to me like with a straight mounting surface like that, it would potentially try to swap one way or another, putting stress on the screws and possibly ripping through the housing and falling to the floor.

any insight and/or pictures on how to mount this type of fixture would be appreciated

You're correct in simply screwing through the fixture into the rafter. The fixtures only weigh 20 lbs or so, use a heavy wood screw and you'll be fine.

I got a bunch of these fixtures for free. I already had the ceiling up in my garage with boxes in place. Since my joists are 24" OC, I oriented them perpendicular to the joists and drove 4 screws w/ washers through them into the joists. No issues at all.

i was thinking this myself over the weekend. it would require me to make new holes in the housings, but thats easy. my joints are also 24" OC

Just use fender washers on your screws and they'll come down when the garage does.
