How do I paint overhead door wood supports?

Our garage door supplier sent a technician to the job several weeks ago to check to make sure the framing was done properly to accept their doors. No comment was made at that time that there was anything wrong.

In the meantime, we filled all the nail holes, sanded and primed the wood

Yesterday, the installers arrived and determined the vertical wood track supports needed to be furred out 1/2" to be able to mount their doors. Now, we have rough unpainted lumber with screw holes showing and the track supports mounted to them. Granted, I would have needed to paint a final color coat over the original primed lumber but that would have been far easier than now having to fill the holes, sand and then prime and final paint the wood.

I'm sure others have run into this problem before and had to paint the wood supports with the tracks already installed. Any pointers someone can give me? If I can paint the galvanized brackets along with the wood, the job would be easier. What prep work would be needed to be able to get paint to stick to the brackets? Would appreciate any suggestions.

Glen

You just get a 1" brush and paint around the brackets.
This wouldn't even slow down a pro painter. It's more of a pain I understand because we don't do it everyday

this is a job i would hand over to my wife because she has a lot more patients than me.
however just a good paint brush and go around each bracket. time consuming but would look a lot nicer than painting the brackets which i think would look sloppy.

Thanks for the input so far. Masking the brackets first would look better, I agree. If they are masked, maybe I can use a rattle can to prime the wood before following up with a small brush for the finish coat. Doesn't look like there is any easy way to do this. Guess I was looking for a miracle method I couldn't think of.

Fill the holes, sand prime, and then paint. The brackets...?....going have to degrease first. Galvanized I assume? I would think you'd have to prime them first also. There was a thread on here a while back where the owner had the track n brackets power coated.

I have more questions than answers.
You can undo the lag bolt and loosen the carriage bolt that hold it to the track. Rotate the bracket out of the way, snug up carriage bolt. Paint around and underneath. Reinstall. you can do a couple at a time per door. Just DO NOT undo both bottom ones at the same time with the door down. This will not work with the flag brackets at the top part of the door. I can't tell from you pics but the bottom 4-5 brackets this will work on.

I think the contrast between the white walls/doors and the natural color of the wood looks nice.

If you just intend to use the garage as a garage, then one option is to leave them alone and don't paint them.

If you really want to paint the wood, then others have given you options that will work. But if it was me, I would leave it alone because it looks nice and is unique to your garage.

Embrace the difference!
