They are tricky, last one I had fixed, the dealer cursed his way threw it for about 45 minutes. My guess was he was relatively new at it. Either a tiny srewdriver or a little fabbed up tool to push the ball in far enough to get the pawl in.

But where does the ball actually go? Not between the spring and the pawl?

If it's like a Snap-on, the spring will go into a hole in the ratchet body and and then the ball goes in between the spring and the gear pawl. There's a special tool for holding the ball in place; it's called an SPP744 and you can order from Snap-on's website.

I used a strip of aluminum.

Put the spring into the hole.
Set the ball into the spring.
Compress ball into spring with Aluminum strip.
Set center wheel into position.
Slip pawl between center wheel and Aluminum strip.
Pull Aluminum strip out.
Voila!

It's a tight fit but doable.

Get this. You will thank yourself and Wamsutta later.

Not saying you can't fab one up but they are so cheap.
