I want to temporarily remove this recessed light to make it easier to run some wires in my basement ceiling.

Do I just need to remove the screws at the bottom?

Most likely, but there will still be a portion of the can mount nailed to the ceiling joist. If you have an occilating trim saw you can cut a bigger access hole to do your fishing. Harbor freight has a great set of fiberglass rods for wire fishing. I paid less than $5 for.

Awesome - thanks. Will I need to disconnect any electrical? Would prefer not to mess with that unless its needed.

those cans normally have an electrical box attached to the top of the can. You will have to cross your fingers when you pull the can out of the hole, that the installer left enough slack in the wire to allow you to do this. You wont know until you try. Make sure you flip the breaker before you attempt :shocking:

Take out the three sheet metal screws, the can part will drop down. It will (should?) either have some metal flex to a box mounted to the part in the ceiling, OR it will have a box mounted to it with romex running into it.

(The new work versus retrofit designs)

The 4 screws are from a new work installation. Remove them and the can should be able to be lowered until the metal flex slack runs out. Usually the can is out of the way enough to fish cable. Worst case, disconnect the flex at the j-box accessible thru the hole.

Old work versions have 4 spring clips instead of screws into a cross bracket and a j-box is suspended from the can where the building wiring directly connects to.
