How do I size a drain basin?

I have a 4" PVC pipe under my garage apron as a water drain. I want to install a drain basin so I can landscape the area to ease mowing and weed control. My question is what size basin will feed the capacity of a 4" drain? I see them in various sizes and they get expensive (for what they are) as they get larger. I realize the grate will have to be kept clear of debris. Thanks for any insight.

It is all relative to the volume of water flow. If you grade a large area to the basin you will need a larger basin or the water will pool around the drain until drains off. Remember a 4" line will only drain so much water per minute. The biggest factors are how much rain falls and the area draining to it. Also how do you plan on landscaping? If you are going to have rock around the basin you could get by with a 8 or 12 inch basin.

The basin will be set in sod with grass on the surface. I understand that a 4" pipe will only drain so much. We recently had a rain of about 2.5 inches in an hour that overwhelmed the drain pipe and the water flowed across the apron. I know that is going to happen, I just want to size the drain to feed the 4" pipe's ability to carry the water off.
