How do they mount?

Lockers & side cabs on the big name boxes....SO, MAC, CW,...etc..

how do they physically mount to the existing boxes?

I think most of them just hang on the side of the box by a lip at the top. The rest of the box just rests against the main box for support

It varies by manufacturer. Some hang by the upper lip on the bottom box. Others use a combination of hanging on the bottom box plus bolting directly to where the push handle mounts on the bottom box, and some also have a bottom support bracket the aligns and secures the bottom edge of the locker with the bottom edge of the box. That's where it gets a little tricky trying to match different brands together. The box height may be taller or shorter than where the locker hanging bracket is so, they don't match up heightwise. Some lockers also aren't as deep as the box you're attaching it to.
