How do they work? - Steelman Chassis Ears

Hi All; I have a set of cordless Steelman chassis ears.

They work great but I'm curious how they actually work. What mechanism does a single clamp and wire use to generate sound?

Does anyone know?

Its a wire connected to a microphone which in turn transmits radio waves to the base unit. Not unlike how a phone or walkie talkie functions.

I had a set, found it impossible to sort out all the various noises. I finally tracked down the noise the old fashioned way, disassembly and inspection. turned out to be a dragging brake shoe.
I sold the set. Managed to get my money out of it.

If you have a set that actually works you are extremely lucky. I believe they are just a
small microphone with a clip. Steve

Haven't used the wireless version, but the old school wired ones are fantastic for tracking down hard to find noises. Don't need anything other than my ears more often than not, but the tool comes in handy from time to time. No matter which version you have, I suggest familiarizing yourself with all the "normal" noises components can make that you would never otherwise hear without the tool installed.


By the way, there's a real cheap version of a steelman electronic stethoscope that includes one of the clamps from the wired chassis ear version.
