How do you do this to metal?

I have an odd question for metal workers out there.

How do you make this pattern, and what is called?

My guess would be an acid drip or heat.

Agree, probably with a laser or other very concentrated heat source for the spots.

I think they call it heat anodizing. It's very popular in the knife world to color folding knife handles. I have seen some sophisticated designs, much more complicated than that pattern.
