I've been using trays in the service cart, but wanting to switch to rails after using them with my impacts.

Much easier to just grab a rail full of sockets when climbing under something instead of crawling in and out to grab a couple of sizes at a time.

People seem to complain when there is a new thread. People seem to complain if an ancient thread is revived. Sort of a lose-lose situation here a lot of the time.

Not saying it shouldn't be thoroughly searched for first, but I know I've had things there were whole threads on that I read through and still didn't find exactly what I was looking for, so a new post it was.:dunno:

I enjoy new discussions, even if on old subjects.

EDIT: And the new pictures that come with :D

I know the blown case is convienent but aren't they space robbing?

Yeah I would say so .....all that stuff in both of those 2 cases could be put in an "organized" fashion in a spot less than the size of one of those cases with some simple Hansen trays or rails

Just wondering how you guys organize all your sockets?

By size but also by use. Meaning if it's an axle nut socket it goes in a bag with some of my impact stuff, though I use impact stuff all the time for non-impact duty I don't use impact extensions, wobbles, and deep impact that much.

I tend to roll 3 deep socket wise for metric (99% 6 point) and 2 deep for sae (1 set 6, 1 set 12) not including assorted specialty stuff. On a job I typically tray stack a "complete" set of shallow cr-v, both metric and sae (3/8), half set of metric impact shallow (1/2"), half set of metric impact deep (1/2"); and bag most of my accessories/specialty stuff. Don't run into sae too much in what I work on and don't often use extensions but always good to have around just in case.

Otherwise most of my sockets are railed, trayed, or bagged based on use. Don't have a big box, don't really have the need at home.

Yes they are. I have reorganized that drawer and added some stuff but those cases are still in there. when I really need space, I will reorganize. they are very easy to access sockets and hold other stuff as well. I can put up an updated pic if i clean up some.

My 6 point stuff is in Hansen trays. I am slowly but surely working on filling the empty pegs. There is a nice thrift store near me that gets a ton of sockets and they go cheap. Problem is I can only stand to sort thru their bins for so long looking for the sizes I need.

My twelve point stuff is on Kobalt trays in the next drawer down and my impacts are on HF trays. Again, need to fill in some pegs. This is the real downside to these types of organizers. Makes you realize how much stuff your missing.

Every set I have came in a good quality case. It's easier to carry to the work. You could store them like books if you wanted.

Conveyor belt magnets (1X2X5/16, used behind the belts to make cans/metal things stick to the belt for vertical lift. you can stack the 1,2,or 3 deep to get more pull, and work with spacing as well..)

That is for the std length 1/2 & 3/8 drives, as well as the 1/2 deeps on a row of magnets stuck to the side of the drawer.

I also use rails (Trimmed to an appropriate length) for other style smaller sets, but the rails are also sitting on the magnets. The rails make it easy to take a set of say 1/4 drive deeps to a job, where it's not so easy to know what size I might need.

No gaps, no wasted space, and NOTHING ever moves even if the drawer gets slammed shut..

jmscollinsiii - I bought them at Princess Auto which is in Canada only. It's similar to Harbor Freight. The large trays sell for about $22 and the small ones for about $14. They are sized to fit common tool boxes. I now have 5 of the larger ones in the drawer that is in the picture. They fit perfectly and fill the drawer completely.

I don't have any pics at the moment, but I bought the cheap metal rails, mounted them to some 1/2"x4" Poplar, and filled the large drawer of my base with them.

Thanks I have never seen the half sheet ones. I want to find one to hold hex and torx drivers.

I have 4 of those Vim trays filled. No pics yet. But the downside to them, is 1/4 shorty sockets are a pain to get out sometimes.

I use 3 princess auto trays just like PCO6. They go on sale for $9 every few months or so. Worth every penny. For the SO sockets I just leave them in their magnetic trays.
