I think most just reference the manufactures website. The first time I posted I thought you were talking about date codes my mistake ;).

Sent directly from the Snap On Kool Aid factory.

all (well most all) the part numbers are available on the brand's website. just browse through the categories in their online catalogs and you'll see the part numbers.

the part numbers for snap-on make sense. for instance:

F - 3/8
H - comfortable handle
80 - number of teeth

FH80- 3/8 comfortable handle 80 tooth ratchet

add f for flex
add l for longer

I used to read the catalog all the time and memorize the part numbers before I got the internet hookup. :D

Website and catalogs laying around in different rooms in the house. Way to many part numbers to even think about.

From the title, I thought this thread was going to be about remembering measurements.

For example, you walk up to the window opening with your tape measure, measure the width of the opening, 61-9/16", and the height, 48-7/16". Then you walk over to the table saw to make your cut, and .... **** what was that measurement again?

I have to use pencil and paper, or sometimes pencil and a piece of scrap wood.

I can't explain what problem I have. Anniversary, birthdays, ages of ny kids, can't remember that **** for the life of me. Ask me about a set of heads I built 5 years ago and I can tell you the spring pressures, coil bind, retainer to seal distance or on the bottom end what I Gapped the rings at. Its baffling.

All I can say is that its not because I "want" to remember the numbers, but you can't talk about Snapon without giving the number or nobody knows for sure which ratchet you are talking about, trying to buy or sell, etc.

I have about 12 000 line items in my shop, some have continuous numbers, others have totally different ones. I try remembering the first few and then the rest comes naturally, my plumbing fittings is the worst, but I do know all of them by heart.

I'd say I know roughly 50-60% of all my codes.

Numbers and letters are just really easy for me to remember. My first job was at ace hardware in high school. People would bring a hand full of items to the counter and I'd have it rung up before they set it down. Its been 9 years since i worked there and i still remember the leaf bag number and others. I remember Pi to about 20 places because of an extra credit problem in 7th grade math. I know more snapon numbers than my driver does.

When I worked for a living I could remember the name of every owner that rolled into the shop by the license plate number/letter, even ten years later. Other techs/writers were constantly amazed when a car would pull in the service drive and I say " Oh look it's Mr/Mrs So and So".

Now a days if I have to remember anything, it goes into my smart phone. Or I take a picture of it.

Very easy, and always available.

Love my iPhone!

I'm pretty good with phone numbers.

I think it has to do with the way our brains our wired. Some folks remember numbers, some can write poetry, some do astro physics, some folks can tell jokes. We all have different gifts and talents.

I remember tons of the snap on part numbers. In fact I could probably tell you some that I don't recall what they are. If you gave me some random Snap on part number i could probably guess what it was.

I have never had any trouble remembering numbers, I am also used to Snap on's numbering system on their tools. That is from buying them for 37 years.
